Version 10 completely buggy, impossible to work

@Terry_C_Watson

Upgrade caused me so many problems.

What upgrade problems did you have. Can you elaborate on that.

Did you eventually get it working ?.

Also what type of email accounts do you have. Eg: POP, IMAP, Exchange, Office 365 or iCloud?

Also did you have the latest V9.2.2258 prior ?

Did you try the latest eM Client V10.0.3266 ?

Lastly do you have Windows or Mac & OS ver ?

@duncanpa

v10 crashes incessantly on one computer and runs OK on at least one other. On the one with crashes I uninstalled eMClient already several times, removed databases, and started adding accounts from scratch one by one

It crashed already on the first account, and continues to do so randomly. That is my main work computer (Win10)

When you add the account that crashes, “what type of account is it” ?, eg: POP, IMAP, Exchange , Office 365 or iCloud.

Also “what point does it crash” ?. Eg: Does it crash part way through the acct setup wizard or after it’s complets the account setup, or when it starts to receive or send mail etc.

Also when it crashes, do you get an error message?

Lastly are you using the latest V10.0.3266 ?

That first account was Office 365. Not a single error message that I can remember, just a simple dropping off the face of the Earth, often in the background without my interaction with the user interface. One way in which I could make it crash in a predictable way was going to a mail folder, clicking on its Properties, and then clicking on Repair, just to open the Repair panel. Before opening the panel, it would crash. At this point I am back to 9.2.2.2258 on that work computer and life is sort of stable - it still might have crashed once, but most of the time I can get my stuff done.

I lost close to two workdays by now on this… Yes, 10.0.3266

Ok so if you are still getting crashes on the same work computer with eM Client V9.2.2258 then sounds like either some sort of eg: “resident program running in the background on that computer is causing interference” or “there is some sort of OS issue” or “Hardware problem”.

I’d suggest to first try eg: disabling all background tasks on the computer startup “other than what’s default with the OS” and reboot and see if that fixes the random crashing…

Now if disabling all background tasks “then stops the crashing”, then enable the resident background programs one at a time and reboot in between till you find the startup program that’s causing it.

Failing that, try creating a new OS user admin profile and see if that fixes it. Could be a problem with the current user profile in some way.

Lastly if even a new OS user profile still has the same issue, I would suggest then to save all your user data and do a clean install of the OS.

I have limited rights on my work desktop. This is due to a focus there on the environment being stable and secure with essential software uniform across users. We run Win 10, because Win 11 is not deemed to be yet reliable enough - we are usually one version behind. What I install there, it is usually a subset of what I have on my laptops. I do not have any other program crashing other than eM Client there and even on the laptops the eM Client crashes occasionally. Of course, there may be different causes of the crashes on different computers. Corruption of the databases or accounts may take place, but how to maintain their integrity when the program crashes - it is an unending loop. I will see what I can do with starting the desktop, but I cannot spend my life on that - there is regular work that I need to do.

Hello Michal,

I believe everything you said and in fact your team is working very well with me in the background to solve some issues.

Bad experiences are good lessons so please let me sum up what would be my personal takeaway from this :

  1. When a db modification makes a step down to a previous version impossible then an automatic backup of the previous db should be integral part of the update process. Nobody here would complain if we would just download the old version and restore the previous state until issues are eliminated.

  2. You mention it : complexity. I fully understand that sales dept. needs to create competitive edges over the competition continuously to keep selling the product. This ironically will push many users away. emClient to me was a very lean and powerful alternative to the big systems but now it is not anymore. I want no AI in my mail client. Yes, I love categories but not automatic ! An easy rule creator for categorization based on senders and keywords would have been better for me. Improvement could have been done regarding easier and faster communication with strange mail servers, certificates, etc. with more detailed problem communication to the user.

To sum it up, v9 was what I wanted and I would love to go back, stay there and pay for live for security updates. But I am just one person, the bigger market might be different and you have to act accordingly. However, maybe the market is also more conservative than you think…

Thank you for your input and good luck in getting things on track fast.

Look to right of Mail. Primary Other the missing emails may be in the Other . NO idea who thought this was a good idea, moreover, they need to be fired. I go to one place to find all emails. Will not spend all day looking through various fol
ders.

I absolutely agree - too many “Bells & Whistles” - Cost is not a particular issue.

A total nighmare. I have not been able to work since wednesday. Your software says that i have 33 000 unread emails, which is not the case.If i click on the unread folder, it is frozen.
If i want to empty a trash an with 600 emails, it will take minutes freezing my computer (which a is a brand new and very powerful one).

And i i click on help / Fprofile for 10, nothing happen

@Ben18

If i click on help / Fprofile for 10, nothing happen.

As per @Olivia_Rust posted near the top of this thread,

Quote - “if you can replicate the freeze, please use the option to Profile the program (Menu>Help>Profile for 10 seconds) and then replicate the issue within those 10 seconds”.

“The logs can then be found via Menu>Help>Open logs directory”.

“Send those logs to me at [email protected] and I’ll get them analyzed so we can see what causes the freeze and find a solution”.

After a time when emClient crashed every time it was started or restarted after this error, I ran Outlook so I could at least get my mail. I then used emClient again and it behaved itself for a couple of days, then today I got this error (full report too long to include):
“An error has occurred in the application that prevents it from continuing.
The application will terminate”

I did capture the error log - how should I submit this?

It does seem that not allowing the app to restart from the error but using the shortcut means it’s more likely to actually start properly.

Even if I don’t believe that eM Client is bug free, crashes (10th version all the time, 9th version sometimes) seems like some hardware/memory problem. I have my own problems with eM Client that I am trying to fix or find a workaround, but they’re not related to stability. And believe me - my system is full of various types of software and background processes.

I would made some small test. Just in case. Download Macrium Reflect and try to image your system to some other drive. Then verify that image. If verification ends without errors - you’re fine. If not - you may have problem with memory OC or CPU OC. And even if you’re not overclocker - some memory sticks are OC by default if you’re using XMP.

Why using Macrium Reflect and not some memory tester? Well, I had two cases already where memory testers says that everything is fine, and Reflect still produces images that fails at verify. It’s very demanding piece of software that process a lot of data.

If you don’t want to test it that way, try at first just disable ram OC by switching XMP off in your BIOS. And re-seat your ram sticks.

I’m going back to V9 while waiting for a stable version 10

Thanks for the advice. However, v. 9 has been crashing, sort of on and off, on my other systems too. It could have been related to particular accounts, but I do not really know. I tried to uninstall and reinstall accounts and eM Client itself and sometimes these crashes cured themselves, at least temporarily. There is no other software crashing on my main work system and I work on it round the clock every workday. As the days of Win 3.1 are long gone, you are used these days to the software running in a stable manner no matter what. eM Client is pretty singular in its crashes. Across the recent years I can recall one version of CorelDraw suddenly closing and WinSCP but then again in one version. Curiously, v.10 of eM Client seems more stable than v. 9 on my 3 other systems, maybe because not enough time expired since installation, but I do not know and cannot spend my life on this.

Thanks again for the advice that I may use directly or indirectly. For now, I am off for 2 weeks of travel with a laptop only. On the main work system I will stick for now with v.9 that seems stable there and wait for next update.

Are you referring to your existing “Blacklist rules” ? or other existing rules ?

As there is another new thread where a user advised their blacklist rules were not working since updating to the new V10 (where the blacklist rules are now in Settings), so wondering if yours was the blacklist rules you were referring to above not working, or your non blacklist other rules not working.

And, stupid me! I have been so happy with emc that I spent the $100 for lifetime upgrades instead of $35 to go to 10. Fortunately, I can afford the loss.

I’m going to keep 10 for a while, so maybe I can document issues and help them work through them. I noticed my Blacklist rule in Rules was gone and I can’t find a way to get it back. I’m a little unhappy. OH, WAIT! Its in settings now and it kept all my old stuff. A little less unhappy now.

I’m sure glad I didn’t upgrade the wife. She would be super pissed and I just don’t need that kind of grieve.

Ok I see there is also a new thread today where a user also updated to V10 and their rules for putting incoming emails automatically into different folders based on their sender-email are not longer working automatically (only when manually applying them).

So could be something possibly happened or changed in some way when the rules have moved in the new V10.

Do any of your automatic rules work if you manually run them ?

Also can you post examples of your move to folder rules and unread rules ?
