…
With POP3 accounts, messages are deleted from the mail server when they are moved from the inbox of the respective account.
In the account settings, only Delete from server when deleted in trash is specified.
Please help quickly!
If this has been deactivated, it works:
‘Remove from server if deleted from “Deleted items”’
Deleting from the server may only refer to the recycle bin - never to moving to local folders!
Please correct this immediately! I am also ready for a beta test. But I can’t continue working like this!
I’m testing with Apple’s Mail.app and eM Client.app in parallel!
if you want to keep messages on the server Inbox for a POP account after downloading to eM Client Inbox, then you need to set “how many days to leave it on the server before its deleted” via the “remove from server after x days” field in the accounts setup.
If you don’t have that box checked and x days set, then your messages on the server Inbox will automatically delete after downloading mail to eM Client inbox “as per how POP accounts work”.
But that doesn’t sound coherent, it sounds absurd.
I want to leave the mails in eM on the server forever and not delete them after one day!
How high can you set the number of days? How can you reach infinity?
10 years would be 4000 days rounded up.
But that doesn’t sound coherent, it sounds absurd. I want to leave the mails in eM on the server forever and not delete them after one day
Leaving messages on the server Inbox for eg: 1 day in a POP account setup was only an example as most POP mail boxes are usually very small eg: 5GB max in size.
So if you only had a 5GB online mailbox, you would normally set the POP account to leave messages on the server for maybe no more than eg: 4-5 days which is usually default in most mail clients “so it then doesn’t fill up your online mailbox too quickly”.
So it all depends “on the size of your specific mailbox on the server end” as to how many days you set in that box. That’s up to you too set. If you have a eg: 100GB online mailbox then you can set that remove from server days much higher.
Lastly if you setup any other devices with the same POP account like the eg: eM Client mobile app, “you need to also set the same amount of days to match” or otherwise it will remove the messages on the server after downloading.

Now set:
Leave copy of messages on server
Remove from server after 8000 days
Remove from server if deleted from ‘Deleted items’
Nevertheless, mails from POP3 mailboxes are deleted from the server if you move them to another local folder!
THIS IS A BUG! Please change it immediately!
Similar setting worked perfectly in MS Outlook 2011 for Mac, Postbox, Thunderbird - why not in eM?
Nun eingestellt:
Sorry i carnt fault that in the latest eM Client with my own test POP account at my local ISP when i set leave a copy of messages on server. So something else must be causing it to be removed in your inbox at the server end. Make sure “if you have any other devices configured to the same email account with the POP setup” that they are also set to leave a copy of messages on server for the same amount of time. So dbl-check all your other devices.
Also no one would normally put remove from server after 8000 days for a POP account. Thats an extremely long time unless you have a seriously large mailbox. If you want to keep mail on your server for that long, then you are best to look at changing to an IMAP setup in eM Client so all your mail “then stays on the server end” and all your devices then see the same identical email.
Lastly if all your other devices are also configured to leave a copy of messages on the server the same and still your mail is being removed from your server end after downloading to your Inbox in eM Client with a POP setup, then you need to contact your Mail server technical support for assistance to find out why thats happening.
I test this on some POP3 Mailboxes, all have the same settings.
I test this → close Apples Mail.app start eM Client, send an eMail to me self. If it comes after Sync in eM Inbox I move this to an local folder. Sync again and close eM.
Start Mail.app - this mail are not seen.
I test this with some of my POP3 Mailboxes!
Now with another, the test mail is deleted from the Server!
And I don’t want to change from POP3 to IMAP!
If I disable “Remove from server if deleted from ‘Deleted items’“ all works well
If I enable “Remove from server if deleted from ‘Deleted items’“ mails are deleted if moved!
Now it’s your turn!
Now I test this with two (IMAP / POP3) new profiles with only one mailbox - it’s the same!
If I disable “Remove from server if deleted from ‘Deleted items’“ all works well
If I enable “Remove from server if deleted from ‘Deleted items’“ mails are deleted if moved!
Now it’s your turn!
Hello,
Thank you for your detailed testing and for bringing this issue to our attention.
We fully understand your concerns regarding the behavior of the “Remove from server if deleted from ‘Deleted items’” setting, and we truly appreciate the time you’ve spent reproducing the issue.
To clarify: when an email is moved to another local folder, this action is technically interpreted as a copy + delete operation. As a result, the original message is treated as deleted, which triggers the setting mentioned above—even if the message was not moved into the ‘Deleted items’ folder.
The confusion stems from the fact that the setting’s name implies it only applies when messages are deleted from the ‘Deleted items’ folder, but it applies to any delete operation, regardless of the folder. We recognize this can be misleading.
We sincerely apologize for this behavior and any inconvenience it may have caused. Your feedback is extremely valuable, and we will escalate this internally for further review. At the very least, the name and description of this setting should be revised to better reflect its true function better.
Best regards, Tomas
Strangely, with Outlook 2011 for Mac, Postbox, Thunderbird, moving works without deleting the mail from the server.
We now understand the issue and we’ll come up with some fix in the upcoming update. Thank you for reporting it.
We went through it again and I have some additional questions:
-
Do you use separate tree for your POP3 account/s or you store them all in single Local folders folder tree?
-
To exactly what folder are you moving the email to? We’ve tested it and if it is moved within the same account, the message is not deleted from the server. If you move it to a different account (aseparate pop3 account tree node or ie. IMAP account) it IS deleted (when the option you mention is enabled), but we believe this is kind of logical behavior.
-
What really is your use case. Do you use two email clients just for testing purposes or there is a bigger picture?
-
Why do you still use POP3? What are the advatages or use cases?
Please note that there would be no way how to delete the message from the POP3 server if we don’t delete it within the move to a different account command.
I move that to the Local Folder - so as I had done in OL2100, Postbox, Thunderbird
here in “__Text Inbox“
I don’t want another discussion about why I’m still using POP3, I’ve had enough of those already!
Please can you respond on questions 1 and 3 too? At least please post a screenshot of a folder FROM which you are moving as well. This is crucial for understanding your problem.
We’ve gone through it again, and I have a few additional questions:
1) Do you use a separate folder tree for your POP3 accounts, or do you store them all in a single “Local Folders” folder tree?
Single local folder tree - imported from Postbox, previously laboriously imported from MS Outlook 2011 for Mac.
2) Which folder exactly are you moving the emails to? We’ve tested it, and if it’s moved within the same account, the message isn’t deleted from the server. If you move it to a different account (e.g., to a different POP3 account tree node or an IMAP account), it will be deleted (if the option you mentioned is enabled), but we believe this is logical behavior.
Different folders, depending on the topic, are usually moved there via rule.
3) What is your actual use case? Are you using two email clients just for testing purposes, or is there a larger connection?
I always use a second email client alongside Apple’s Mail.app. I started with Entourage, which I used to import emails from Outlook (Windows).
Then Outlook 2011 for Mac, laboriously migrated to Postbox, and now laboriously back to eM.
Why I don’t rely solely on Apple’s Mail.app? I’m keeping a backdoor open to Linux.
4) Why are you still using POP3? What are the advantages or use cases?
Habit - and I want to control what stays on the server, even though I move some emails locally into a folder structure.
If I move them locally with IMAP, they’re gone from the server. Of course, you can also create a rule to only copy them.
Outlook 2011 had a feature that let you click on each email to delete it from the server, but unfortunately, no one copied it.
I’ve had this discussion about IMAP versus POP3 several times.
Explanations:
Microsoft Entourage (MS Office 2009 for Mac) Microsoft Entourage - Wikipedia
Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 - Wikipedia
Now, there are no more Microsoft products for Mac. I use SoftMaker Office SoftMaker Office | Die DSGVO-konforme Alternative zu Microsoft Office
SoftMaker would also be a cooperation partner for eM, right?
PS: Do you also discuss in German?
