Migration to em client from Postbox - how it's going for me

Another vote for MUCH better keyboard navigation and to be able to make tabs of mailboxes most used.
As another PostBox user, I am now down to eM and Betterbird.
Betterbird lets me do quite a bit that I had in Postbox, and lets me keep my gmail accounts as POP.
eM does have a much better look and ability to customize display, etc., but difficult to navigate easily without getting carpal-tunnel issues.

I wonder how fast Postbox features will get added. Hopefully before that discount runs out.

Yes, an example of where keyboard navigation needs tweaking. Right now Iā€™m composing a new email and want to Add CC. I donā€™t seem to be able to do it from the keyboard, but need to shift to grab the mouse to click on ā€œAdd CC & Bccā€. For workflow composing the email should be do-able entirely by the keyboard. Itā€™s intuitive to tab my way through the fields.

You just press the ā€œTabā€ key and then just ā€œtype in a couple of letters of the recipientsā€ for the Cc and Bcc lines. eM Client will automatically pickup the addressā€™s from your Contact list.

Hi Cyberzork
If Iā€™m in the To: box then press Tab, the cursor jumps to the Subject box. If I mouse click on Add Cc & Bcc then the CC and Bcc boxes appear then I can tab through them, but I need the mouse click to make them appear. Is there a setting to have the Cc and Bcc fields always visible?

This is what I see on New message

Go to ā€œMenu / Settings (Preferences) / Mail / Composeā€ and enable Show Cc and Bcc lines to then show all the time and you can then tab between them.

@Michal_Burger Iā€™m definitely working up a list of feature requests, and I will make them clear, and annotated as needed.

Would your team prefer ONE forum thread with a bunch of requests, or separate threads for each request?

Edit: 2024.10.30: I can now click on column headings to sort. I donā€™t know what changed or what I was doing wrong.

Hi Michal,

Thanks so much for responding directly.

Re: keystrokes. I just found the General > Shortcuts in Settings.

I canā€™t find the ā€œmulti-lineā€ view, but I have ā€œsingle lineā€ set at the moment.

So far I havenā€™t found a table view that allows me to sort on columns.

What is your use case for changing the sort frequently?
My e-mail management is based on reducing all unread e-mail to a total of zero. I prefer to have my inbox containing only unread e-mail. Backlog = unread e-mail. Thus I may wish to tackle my unread e-mails by sender, date or subject.

An e-mail is unread until it is dealt with. This is why I abhor mail clients that insist on marking e-mail as read and do not allow this irritation to be turned off.

I am not interested in categories and I donā€™t put unread e-mails in folders. Only read e-mails are filed away.

I prefer to have my inbox containing only unread e-mail. With Postbox I would periodically manually run ā€œapply filtersā€ on my Inbox. Each filter rule would only process an e-mail that was marked read. This is not possible to do with eM Client at the moment as the filter rules do not allow one to test if an e-mail is read or unread.

Is there a way to construct a view, per account, of all unread e-mail and have it as a default view so that I donā€™t have to point and click and tweak every time I restart eM Client?

Example 1
Favorites > Unread as default view
Then group by Account name

I havenā€™t worked out how to do this. ā€œShow in groupsā€ groups by date and I canā€™t find a way to change it to ā€œGroup by Account nameā€.

Example 2
Favorites > mail account 1 - (unread only)
Favorites > mail account 2 - (unread only)
ā€¦
(I havenā€™t worked out how to do this either)

Hope this helps. Feel free to continue the conversation if anything is impossible/ unclear or can be achieved in a different way.

What exactly do you want to achieve with keyboard only and you canā€™t find a way how?

You can use shift-tab and space

What do you mean by focus pane?

Thanks Cyberzork,
Got it and itā€™s working, I can tab my way through the fields and keep my hands on the keyboard.

Hi Michal
In Postbox there is the option for View > Show Focus pane. Then we click on an email address in an email header and drag it to Favorite contacts. Then clicking on that contact changes the focus of the message list to only messages from that contact. The focus pane lets us focus on attributes, topics (label)s or by date. I use (used) the favorite contacts list frequently in my workflow to quickly find emails from a specific contact.

In Postbox, for me, Focus Pane stayed open all the time. Mailboxes Pane, almost never (because keyboard filing & navigation made it unnecessary).

I can learn to live without it, but Iā€™d sure like to see that feature ported over from Postbox.

EDIT: Oh, and the difference between Postboxā€™s Focus Pane and some similar features in eM Client (Favorites section of sidebar), is that the Focus Pane can operate on a per-account basis ā€” so when I click ā€œUnreadā€ in the Focus Pane, I get unread messages in the folder/account Iā€™m in right now, not all unread messages everywhere (which isnā€™t of much use to me if Iā€™m in ā€œwork modeā€ and ā€œunreadā€ is cluttered up with unread personal emails).

@Michal_Burger Is it really not possible in eM Client to CMD/CTRL+Z to undo the accidental moving/deleting of a message?

Please tell me Iā€™m missing something here, because CMD+Z to undo is UI Design 101, and that little blue overlay that stays on screen for a few seconds doesnā€™t get the job done.

100% of the time, in 100% of circumstances, in 100% of desktop software, CMD/CTRL+Z should undo your last action, no matter what that action was, no matter how long ago you performed it.

Robio, thanks for mentioning Favorites Section. I created a new post as itā€™s worth not burying it in this current thread, new post: https://forum.emclient.com/t/search-folders-in-em-client-similar-to-postbox-focus-pane/102101 and em clientā€™s Search Folders seem to provide a similar function as the Favorites pane in Postbox.

The only thing is I donā€™t like the list of Accounts showing all the time in em client, but to see the Search Folders, I need to keep the account list expanded.

Yeah, I doubt weā€™ll get a Focus pane in eM Client (although never say never ā€” they bought Postbox in part for features, right?). Iā€™ll reply in more detail in your new thread.

@Michal_Burger

What exactly do you want to achieve with keyboard only and you canā€™t find a way how?

  • Undo move/deletion of email
  • Toggle visibility of Mailboxes Panel
  • Toggle visibility of right sidebar
  • Navigation without having to click (just like filing by keyboard, but going to folders ā€” in Postbox, you type ā€œG,ā€ then the first few letters of the mailbox you want, and hit ENTER)
  • Toggle Favorites open/closed
  • Go to (account)/Toggle account open/closed in the Mailbox Panel
  • Mark as read/unread should be the same keystroke ā€” it should be a toggle, not two separate shortcuts (in Postbox itā€™s literally just ā€œMā€ to toggle read/unread)

Thatā€™s off the top of my head ā€” the must-haves. There may be more.

@Michal_Burger
As Tony mentioned, the Focus Pane in Postbox is like Favorites on steroids. Check out Tonyā€™s separate thread for details.

Thank you for the list, weā€™ll take a look on it.

@Michal_Burger One specific PB feature I would like to see is the ability to create templates using account identities different from the default account identity.

In PB, I could create an e-mail from a specific identity, e.g., Alias2, and when I was done, I could ā€œSave As Templateā€ and Alias2 would be preserved as the sender. In eM Client, there is no ability to create a template other than using the default identities for each e-mail account.

Thanks.
