Migration to em client from Postbox - how it's going for me

I’m trying to migrate from Postbox to eM client. All has gone OK EXCEPT none of the 100s of folders I set up in Postbox (where I would file emails that I did not want to delete for records, etc.) were captured by eM client. Did I miss something? This is a deal breaker if I cannot move them over. (Email servers are a mix of POP3 and IMAP.)

Any chance that now is a good time (and excuse) to make the switch to all IMAP servers for future ease in managing your email? I bit the bullet and did it several years ago. Fortunately PostBox’s mailboxes I think are still compatible with Thunderbird so if PostBox eventually stops working for you, you can use Thunderbird to view old mail. But now make the change to entirely IMAP? I know it’ll be some work but it would make your life easier going forward. The other advantage is now I can grab any device and do email. So use PostBox (or Thunderbird if you have to) to view your old email. Then switch any POP mail servers to IMAP and move on in em client.

The other advantage is email in the cloud is better backed up than my sporadic backup procedures when I remembered to do it and not often enough.

Thanks, Tony. My understanding is that Postbox is going the way of the dodo bird, having been acquired by eM Client. So I am trying to migrate from Postbox to eM Client. But I need all my folders with their email. I appreciate the suggestion to move to IMAP. But that doesn’t resolve my current issue. It’s not a question of being able simply to view ‘old’ email–it is my my filing system for email conversations and subjects. I need easy and immediate access.

Adding my voice as a “me, too!”

I used to file my email too back in the days of Eudora email (which folded and I migrated to PostBox) but now I use search to find the emails I need and no longer file my messages in folders. I used to also detach attachments and file those on my harddrive but with search I can find the email pretty quickly. Also the attachments are there too and are backed up on the IMAP server. It was a huge leap to stop filing and just have a giant in-box. However, I can understand that if your filing system works for you, that’s what you want to retain.

It’s another topic but I used to file my photos by month and subject but with facial recognition and geolocation, I can find my photos pretty fast on a map or by face. So new tools offer a different work flow.

Thanks, Tony. Searching works when you can recall key terms and etc. Often I cannot. So the folders help narrow things down. Re. the photos–that is useful info. Thank you!

Thanks - Good to know I am not the only one having this issue with both Themes and filters. I LOVED Postbox and have used it nearly from the beginning. SO SAD to see eM Client hasn’t used the best of Postbox features in their product. Not as happy with being unable to get the theme to same after having multiple times edited it.
Also I can’t figure out how to quite run the filters yet. Having a simple RUN button on Postbox’s toolbar made it easy when for me with having 6 email addresses and multiple filters to move into multiple folders.

I followed this exactly, per the directions, and my Save As theme appeared just like your screen shot, but when I tried to click on it…it wouldn’t load as I had designed it. I spent over 90 minutes editing the theme, again and again, and saving it…And it didn’t appear when selected the same way as I wanted it to. Has anyone found a fix?
All I wanted was to echo Postbox theme with the left side mail column a darker background and the tool bar at the top darker. I did finally import from eM Client one almost similar and it works, but it is still not quite right and tough when on a large monitor.

Yes, my biggest nit so far is the convoluted issues with filters/ rules. Not only are then they not working properly, but I can’t even figure out easily how to run them. As mentioned, Non of my migrated Postbox filters (which took years to perfect, given 6 email accounts coming from gmail and different servers, has made me wonder if this is the right email client for someone with large multiple emails at once.

eM Client is currently looking at implementing Postbox features to eM Client as you will see in the below Announcement page where you can also “vote for those ideas” and also “add any other features you would like that aren’t there” on the Sleekplan suggestion and ideas page.

All new updates once implemented will then be available via the release history page.

If you are editing an existing theme to customise it do the following.

1). First “click on the theme you like” and then save the theme via the “Advanced button” at the bottom right in “Menu / Settings (Preferences) / Appearance / Themes” as per screenshot example below.

image

2). Then open the Theme editor and “open that saved theme”.

image

3). Then “edit the theme” and then “save the theme” once finished via the “Save As” button.

4). Next import your new saved theme “via the import button” at the bottom of Themes.

image

5). Then “click on your imported theme” at the bottom of Themes and click “Apply” and “Save Settings” as per my custom theme example below. Lastly close & reopen eM Client.

There is also eM Client user created themes you can check out as well apart from your own.

Also I can’t figure out how to quite run the filters yet.

Having a simple RUN button on Postbox’s toolbar made it easy when for me.

In “Menu / Rules” (Pc) or “Tools / Rules” (Mac) you can also just click “Apply” on the toolbar to run either a single rule or multiple selected rules".

Give them time. They just acquired Postbox a few weeks ago.

@Michal_Burger Any chance you could add “links to individual messages for external use” to your list of requested features from Postbox?

Useful for using in external apps.

E.g., right-click an e-mail, get link to it, copy and paste in to a task management program like ClickUp. When you click the link, it opens emClient and the e-mail.

Obviously would only work on computers with emClient installed.

This might help you with linking messages to other programs.

You can currently eg: drag the email subject onto your desktop which creates an .eml message, and then drag that to whatever other program you want.

That will then open in eM Client when clicked to view or open in whatever mail client is set as default if it was then sent to other peeps not using eM Client.

That was a very helpful tip, thank you!

Not as fast as a link would be, but not too bad in the mean time.

Thanks!

Can you please navigate me where I can find that feature in Postbox and how does it work?

I agree, sometimes I can’t remember sufficient key words or correct spelling to find a message or attachment. Or it was sent by someone else. I use gmail workspace for my email backend and whether it is em client or was PostBox, gmail’s search seemed to work better and failing a search in Postbox or now em client, I’ll use gmail in a web browser and I have better luck. I wonder if gmail uses fuzzy logic to find something close, much like its search engine rather than finding exact matches.

I also use Copernic to index every word in every file on my HDD and in every email stored locally so I have my own internal search engine. The solution is for senders to include descriptive subject lines and text in email bodies and not just write “here it is”. But it’s hard changing human behavior and not thinking ahead.

Honestly, I am surprised that they did this transition so abruptly and with out any proper time. 2 months notice, less for many users, is not enough.

Furthermore, EM Client is supposed to be much more powerful, feature rich and advanced, and, has a much larger development team, so the notice to Postbox users stated.

So far, even after buying a license (under discount), I am finding EM Client to be far less mature, and has obvious bugs that should not be in a stable release product.
Sure it has more features, but they feel less intuitive overall, and some, much less thought out and many things are inconsistent with certain features and UI elements in different parts of the software. (Contacts for one)

And, to top it all off, user are encouraged to post here, this community forum board for help and suggestions, and feedback. Where basically, just one other user/customer, spend all of their time and seems to know everything about the product, and is fast to post screenshots and give directions… but is not even related to the company or a dev.
Nothing wrong with that, for the most part, but ultimately, nearly everything i post about, that user can not re-produce, and the topic seemingly is dropped as sorry, but it is not happening elsewhere so thus, it is not anything to be done about it.

EDIT. Just to clarify, i have tried dozens of other email clients recently, and did not find any of them suitable for my needs or preferences. I kept coming back to EM Client, because it was the closest thing to Postbox, mostly in function and UI. However, it is proving to be a bit rougher of a transition that i would have expected.

I agree with most of this.
