Version 7 Scroll Bar

Jeff and Michael ~

The scroll bar problem has been resolved. Normal system scroll bars are now available with the Modern and Classic themes. This will appear with the next update. If you want to try a test version of the update, i believe there’s a link to it in this thread.

Just want to add my voice to the comments about the WAY TOO THIN scrollbar. Impossible to grab, difficult to see. I struggle daily with these scrollbars. I need to be able to easily grab and move them, as well as clearly see when there is more content below the fold. As it stands, this is a usability fail. Please make them wider and don’t hide them, ever. There is no good reason to and several reasons not to.

I’d much prefer a “clunkier” look with better functionality than what you’ve given us. We don’t need a party dress we need overalls. Get it?

Read up the thread a bit. There’s been a fix provided.

@Wayne Aprato : This thread has gotten too long for me to see what you’re referring to. If it’s the “Classic Plus” theme, that does not change the scroll bar situation. I’m using it now. If there’s been another fix, would you mind citing it? Thanks.

Yes please show us - I just read most of this thread and saw no fix…

It’s in a post by Filip Navara the dev. There’s a link to a pre release build that reinstates the normal scroll bars.  http://www.emclient.com/dist/v7.0.26787/setup.msi

Thank you! (I’m wondering if I’m going to have to go through that awful, misbegotten update routine again, but I suppose I will know soon enough).

No problem.

Oh I see it now (down the thread not up for anyone looking for it). Thank you Wayne. The dev does mention it’s not tested yet - so I think I’ll wait. Don’t have time to break things right now.

Fair enough. I haven’t had any issues with it though. Cheers.

"A pre-release build is available at http://www.emclient.com/dist/v7.0.267… " Could you tell us whether this is another (insufferable) update routine where we are left with a virgin install and have to import hours worth of old data, or does it just fix what’s broken? You know, like an update. Thanks!

A pre-release is a pre-release and he said clearly that it is not ready for release and should only be applied if someone desperately needs to have system scrollbars.

I believe what you describe has only happened to some people on going from v6 to v7 - major version update. I consider it unlikely that this would happen with minor updates but you should probably stick to official releases and maybe wait with those until you can see in the forums here if there where problems that might affect you.

Updates may always introduce new problems while fixing others. It is not possible to test every possible environment, OS-Version, Hardware, other software on the machine, setups etc. etc. Not even for the really big players like Microsoft, Apple, Google etc.

I have not had any problems with the pre-release update… just installed over top of the original v7 and everything is good now with real system scroll bars (only for modern and classic themes).

I did not have any problems with this pre-release either, but I still prefer the small scrollbars over the system scrollbars for purely asthetic reasons  But I look forward to a solution where I can actually see and use the scrollbars again - and that looks nice as well

NO Shanna and Filip

This is 3 weeks later and THE SCROLL BAR PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED!!!

Shanna  said normal system scroll bars are available with the modern or Classic Theme ( Filip said Classic and System )-- I tried all of these themes and  it didn’t change anything at all
( and I’m NOT very happy that it is supposedly offered on 2 themes only )

Filip-- The way your response is worded, I took it to mean that there is somewhere in these 2 themes that I  can change the option ( or pick) on the  scroll bar size— if that is what you meant, please tell me where to find this  as I have looked and can’t find it…  if you meant that it would automatically be bigger by picking one of the 2, it is NOT— The scroll bar is fine in any other application I use it in… I am using Windows 7 with version 7.0.26687.0 of eM Client

and yes  Filip did say that there was a pre-release build available  BUT the average Joe wouldn’t take such a risky move especially if they have every lost their email/ email program before which I have…

and  for now my finally  comment is  that I hope when you do fix this problem, that the fix will be for all the themes available ( we don’t want to get into the fact that all the themes available really suck as all are BRIGHT WHITE with BRIGHT colors except 2 or BLACK header  with BRIGHT WHITE when composing an email-- all hard on the eyes)

thanks in advance for any help

I am necessarily risk-averse, and I have been using the pre-release with no problem whatsoever for three weeks. It is here:  http://www.emclient.com/dist/v7.0.26787/setup.msi

I agree in principle with your criticism of eM Client staff’s approach to product development. It is a fundamentally good application from good people who are heartbreakingly bad at marketing and making it better. IMO.

I got a new version from the support staff today that solves the print preview bug. As a side benefit, I just noticed that the scroll bar is back to normal! But only in the “system” and “classic” design. Good enough for me:
http://www.emclient.com/dist/v7.0.26861/setup.msi

So the pre-release build (.26861) thankfully fixes the ridiculous scrollbar issue in two themes. When can we expect to see all the themes fixed?

As an alternative, can the existing themes be modified to fix this ourselves?

For anyone interested (if it hasn’t been mentioned elsewhere), I found an easy fix for the useless scrollbar issue. Why somebody from eM hasn’t mentioned it here (much less fixed it) yet is beyond me, but anyway…

Save the theme you want to fix the scroll bar on as a new theme. Open it in Notepad+ or any other text/xml editor. Look for the following line:

False

Change that value to “True”, save, and then import the new theme.

That worked fine for the Mystic theme for me, but I haven’t tested it on others.
