Thank you, but where is “the application icon”. The [image] link did not show its location. I tried clicking on the icon in the Windows 10 task bar, but that didn’t work.

OK solved. The message was hidden behind other screens.

I spoke too soon when I said problem solved. I assumed that I needed to enable offline mode on start only once. But it now appears I need to do it every day. My practice is to put my PC to sleep every evening without closing eM Client, and open the next morning. But when I do this eM Client downloads all my emails before I have time to check and delete the spam.

Is there any way I can stop this? If not, I think I need to go back the the previous version of the program.

Thinking about it, I can see that it is probably not possible to do what I ask. I have to come out of offline mode on startup every day in order to download emails, so it seems necessary to go through the offline procedure every day.

So, is it possible to revert to version 9? if so, how can I do this.

Thanks for the help with this.

How could you remove that? How can you misuse my credentials and connect to my email, if I didn’t agree with it? IMAP or Exchange is not an appologize.

Please restore this option. If it’s not doing any harm, what is the problem? This is an unnecessary change to an otherwise excellent email client.

Agreed. I wanted to capture some emails that were still in my local copy of eM Client, but had gotten removed from my Gmail account through a different email client. So, I followed the instructions I found about holding down the ctrl key while starting. Imagine my chagrin when eM Client proceeded to synchronize anyway.

As to this: “We removed that setting for version 10 as both IMAP and Exchange accounts ignored it anyway.” I don’t understand this. No IMAP account will initiate a sync on its own. That action is initiated by the client.

No IMAP account will initiate a sync on its own. That action is initiated by the client.

You carn’t stop an IMAP or Exchange account email arriving in the client “due to the nature of those type of accounts”, and the only way to stop that in eM Client is to “disable IMAP or Exchange” in the account setup which also then means you won’t see the account in the left panel as its hidden. POP accounts are different as they can be disabled on startup in Settings.

So if you want to disable your IMAP account from receiving mail, open your account and go to the General Tab and uncheck the IMAP box under Services as in this Outlook.com example. Then Save accounts. Then close and reopen eM Client. You can then enable it anytime later.

Unfortunately, that sequence doesn’t work. The emails were already deleted from my Gmail account. But because I store all messages locally on the client, I wanted to find some way to use those client copies to get them back on Gmail. But if I follow your directions and open the account, then eM Client will sync with Gmail, and delete the locally-stored messages.

For those who may find this message thread through search, I solved this issue by disabling the network connection on my computer. Then, I was able to start eM Client, which of course could not sync without a connection. I then saved the email messages I wanted to a local folder. I then re-enabled the network connection, which of course allowed eM Client to delete the emails. I then moved them back from the local folder into the Gmail folder from which they were just deleted, and eM Client then synced them back to Gmail.

The main point here is that the documentation for eM Client is wrong about holding down the ctrl key to start the program in offline mode.

No that documentation is correct to boot up in offline mode. I’ve done that heaps of times.

Once opened in offline mode as per screenshot below, if you want to sync emails back to the server from Local folders, you would normally then just copy or move the emails from your local folder back up to your IMAP account. Then “go back online” by clicking the red offline text which will then sync those emails back to the IMAP server

You don’t normally have to disconnect your network connection to stop the mailer synching.

If your mail client is synching in offline mode, then you might have a problem with the installation and might need uninstalling and reinstalling.

No, eM Client is not syncing in offline mode. The point I’m trying to make is that since holding down the ctrl key does not cause eM Client to start in offline mode, the only way I can get eM Client into offline mode is to start it and force it into offline mode from within the program. And of course, starting it causes it to sync.

I’m running eM Client in a VirtualBox session under Linux. Maybe that is why the ctrl key is not working to cause eM Client to start offline.

Holding down the Ctrl key before clicking the eM Client “does work for me on” on PC and Mac on any version of eM Client. Don’t know why it doesn’t for you.

Yes could be due to running eM Client in your VM on Linux. Could be your Linux VM keyboard mapping is possibly differant. Others on this forum who use Linux might comment. Suggest to update what VM machine you are using and also what flavour of Linux you are running.

Thank you for sticking with me on this. I wanted to close the loop in case someone else in the same situation finds this discussion.

I finally did get eM Client to start up in offline mode inside a VirtualBox VM, using the left Ctrl key. The secret was patience. My system is pretty quick, though it is 10 years old: 12-core, 3.1 GHz dual AMD Piledriver 4234 CPUs. When I start eM Client, it’s really slow coming up. Being used to everything happening quickly, I would hold the left Ctrl Key just long enough for the the busy spinner to appear, then let go. That was the wrong thing to do. I had to continue to hold the left Ctrl Key until eM Client eventually appeared, and then it would pop up a message asking me if I wanted to start in offline mode. This took what felt like 10-15 seconds.

The Ctrl key might also not be working if you are left clicking on the eM Client Shortcut on your desktop. So try opening eM Client from the taskbar icon instead in your VB in Linux if you haven’t already. Thats the way i do it.

If you have eM Client for Windows in a Virtual Box like this example below on eg: “Mac with eM Client V10.4.5326 with Windows 11 Pro running in Parallels Virtual Box”, then hold down the Ctrl key and while holding “right click” on the eM Client icon on the Taskbar and then click “Mail” under new window at the top and you should then see the Splash screen with a message "Do you want to start in Offline Mode.

Also for eM Client on Mac users while holding down the Ctrl key “right click” on the Dockbar “New Window / Mail”, which also asks if you want to start in offline mode as in the below eM Client V10.4.5326 under Mac OS 26.4 example screenshot below.

Ok great its working now. I didn’t think about the speed of the computer that might be the issue.

Again for the benefit of others who may find this discussion, the Windows version works similarly. When I right click, the pop-up list doesn’t have the option for “New Window”, so I just clicked on the “New Mail” option. As you describe, when eM Client finally initializes, it does pop up the same message you show asking if I want to work in offline mode. Once I answer that question, it will then show the New Mail window.

Personally, because of the extra steps involved, I find it easier to use the first method we discussed of just holding down the left Ctrl key while left clicking the eM Client icon.
