Show icon in system tray while main window of eM Client is open (on Windows OS)

OK, so it is not disappearing, just moving around. That is what our setting of Close application to tray does. If it is not closed, it is not in the tray.

But don’t you think our option is better? Why have the icon on both places? Seems that Telegram is using double the space it should when the application is open.

Hi @JamesFrost

I have looked at your pictures, all very interesting; what’s your point?
If you are trying to illustrate that the eMC icon disappears, we already know this.

If you are desperate for the Task bar icon to be always visible do this, as I thought I had previously explained, however, maybe there is a language problem?
I’ll try again…

1./ Create a shortcut icon for eMC on the Task bar - you can then launch eMC from here
2./ Menu ->Settings ->General ->Check Minimize application to tray & Close application to tray
3./ eMC icon will appear in System tray when running in background from where you can re-launch eMC
4./ When launched this way System tray icon hides BUT Task bar icon does NOT hide
5./ Both icons are visible whilst eMC is in background
6./System tray icon will disappear when you exit eMC ( right click icon - exit)

Let me please explain why I think it would be better not to hide eM Client system tray icon when main window of the app is opened.

While working with several apps there are several panels on Task bar. There is a eM Client among them. Quite often working at the computer forces you to switch frequently between windows without closing its main windows. And quite often you change an order of panels using drag-n-drop. And there comes a moment you forget where on Task bar eM Client is. You have to look for it every time you need open the eMC main window.

Such searching creates additional cognitive load because the brain solves other problems meanwhile.

Purpose of always visible system tray icon is quick search of the icon and ability to click on it to bring eM Client main window forward.

Creating a shortcut icon for eMC on the Task bar doesn’t solve the problem.

Please see folowing GIF:

As you see the hortcut icon disappears too.

And besides, shortcut icon for eMC on the Task bar creates additional ploblem: if you click on shortcut icon for eMC on the Task bar and change the position of eMC panel using drag-n-drop and after that close the app -> shortcut icon of the app changes position too (now it between panels of other apps)

Hi @JamesFrost

Of course I do not know how you have your computer setup or the capability of your system.

First on the taskbar all my shortcut icons are label free, they are for the apps I regularly use; there are 32, plus 7 visible in the system tray & 11 hidden - I recognize them all and know their positions which are locked and don’t change, they don’t jump about all over the place.
I frequently have 12+ windows open and can also be logged into 5/6 web sites and or cloud databases plus any of our offices on our intranet.
When an app is active/in use an underscore is visible on the particular apps. Placing the mouse over an icon allows the choice of document/spreadsheet/etc if multiple are open in say word/excel/etc, simply by placing the mouse over a peek item and clicking brings it into focus; I also have a split screen ability that allows up to 4 screens in focus.
I do not have any problems working this way perhaps because I am fortunate in that I have a powerful workstation laptop linked to a 32" screen as well as the 17.3" laptop screen itself. The setup suits me.
If you are keen to work in the way you describe you should consider making a Feature Request.

In the meantime my wife was looking over my shoulder saw your post…

She said that the issue is that most men can’t multi-task unless it concerns football or watching porn.
As it happens I have no interest in either though it’s easier to agree.

Unfortunately not everyone has a widescreen monitor.

Telling about cognitive load I just want to explain that it would be great not to seach eMC panel on Task bar and instead click to system tray icon to bring eMC main window forward

I agree with James, I’d like the icon displayed in the tray at all times for convenience. I find this gives the best flexibility when quickly needing to maximize & minimize EM Client through out the day when I want to check or do something.

Why not just let people choose for themselves & give them the option to do this? The best software does this, allowing the user to configure & run an application to suit their way of working, not just how the developer thinks their program aught to be used.

If you mean the system tray the facility is already there in eMC.
As far as your other comments are concerned you have the option of submitting another specific Feature Request stating exactly what you would like…

@ skybat - “If you mean the system tray the facility is already there in eMC.”

Could you please indicate to me how to display the EM Client icon at all times (both when the app is maximized & minimized) in the System Tray / Notification Area?

Mine only appears when the app is minimized. I can’t see how to enable this for both states in the settings for EM Client.

Thanks…

This is exactly what I mean.
I think no need to create the same feature request.

I think it too would be a good extra option in “Settings” to have like eg: “Always display application icon in tray”.

(Suggestion in Settings).

Older thread on the subject.

Always enable system tray icon - eM Client

Yes, It will be good option

I was just preparing to write the same topic !!
Thanks James :
I want EXACTLY the same: Please enable tray icon permanently (when window is minimized/closed but also when maximized/visible), I’m frustrated when I look in the tray area and … can not see EmClient (why!? did it close? Wher’s my e-mail … ah… damn … it’s opened, I need to search it through all my open windows in the taskbar …).
What cyberzork suggested is also something I would like !

Again, I’m disappointed that v9 still doesn’t have this as an option.

These small productivity enhancements add up, and I’d take just this plus one two other long-standing issue improvements over much of the regular new feature introductions, which don’t enhance my day to day use of EM Client in any way.

I was hoping that in v9 developers will add this option

Adding my vote to please implement this.

Another reason to have it, is that a single click of the systray icon should open the window and bring it to the foreground. Clicking it again in the systray, without having to move my mouse, should hide the window again.

I will echo the opinion that others have written here: This is how many other apps behave in the systray and eM client should mirror that behaviour for a consistent user experience.

For example Skype for desktop has the same behaviour

One of the recent updates makes it so that eM Client will no longer open when clicking it from the taskbar if it is already running. I’m not sure if this is related, but it’s annoying.

Hey @Ersan

It will help if you will say if you use Windows or Mac and the eMC upgrade from
v? to v?

Perhaps it is your setup as it works perfectly for me with the latest v8 & v9 on
different computers running Win10 & Win11

¡Buena suerte!

Hopefully this’ll be helpful to all those who are annoyed that this hasn’t been fixed in Em Client yet.

I’ve found a workaround by installing ‘4t Tray Minimiser’. This small app is free (though there is a paid version), and it adds a window button to all apps for minimizing to the notification tray. Once minimized, the app can be brought back up again by a single click on the tray app icon, which is always displayed. It seems to work perfectly for everything, not just Em Client.

Hopefully this will help all those that miss this basic functionality in Em Client.
