Restore 1 email from a Macrium Reflect backup

I deleted an email from eM Client (version 10) – probably a few days before eM Client’s backup ran. But I use Macrium Reflect to back up everything on my Windows 11 PC more often than eM Client’s backup runs. So the email is probably in a Reflect backup. I did 2 backups around that time, so those are the backups I’m looking at.

But how do I find the email in Reflect’s backup and restore it (or at least copy it or print it out) without replacing my current eM Client database or restoring all the old emails into my current eM Client database?

I tried using Windows Explorer to browse through the files in the Reflect backup. I see eM Client’s folders there. But I can’t find any .eml files in eM Client’s database files/folders. And even if I did find one, I’m not sure how to restore it or print it.

Many thanks for your help!

You can either do a Partial restore from an eM Client backup.zip file or you can do a partial restore from the eM Client hidden database folder. See my link below for info.

Note: You will obviously have to first (extract either your eM Client backup.zip file with the missing email from your Macrium Reflect image), or (extract your eM Client hidden database folder with the missing email from your Macrium Reflect image) before doing the below.

Is the email not still on the email server deleted items folder? Or are you using POP3 and not IMAP? Or are you saying you deleted the email from the trash?

If you want to save a offline email, u can just drag and drop the email to your desktop, and it saves it as a .eml. Or you can Print to PDF and save it as a file somewhere else. I do this alot for emails i want to save, but not leave in a email client.

I use Macrium Reflect as well, but only for full Disk Imaging, not file/folder backup. U can open disk images and pull out select files though. You could just use a VM or another computer if you have one, and install eM Client on that, and restore your backup, or manually copy over the data files from the backup image.

Thanks for your replies! I’ll try your suggestions soon. I’ve printed out your October partial restore advice @cyberzork. @speedingcheetah the email was last March, so I’m sure it isn’t on the server or in a current eM Client backup. That’s why I need to rely on Macrium Reflect backups, which I keep for about a year. I’m pretty sure I deleted the email almost as soon as I got it, so eM Client’s backup routine didn’t get a chance to grab a copy, since eM’s backup only runs every 2 weeks. I use Reflect to copy images of the hard disks more often than that. So I’ll be looking inside one of those images to retrieve the file(s) needed.

Gotta try this in a few days. I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks again!

@cyberzork I ended up using the October 1, 2024 post you link to above. Thank you! It worked like a charm. I used Macrium Reflect to browse through my old backups from that time, I mounted a couple of them, found the emails I needed, and saved them as .eml files.

One thing that was a little uncomfortable for me was the warning messages I got from eM Client when I opened the old email databases. I had updated eM Client to the latest version sometime between when I made those backups and now. So when I opened up those old emails, eM Client warned me about needing to get a new eM Client license to continue using it. But once I started using the current eM Client database again, all was well. That was a few days ago, and I’m having no warning messages or problems.

Thanks again for your help!
