Opening DAT Files

Can someone kindly tell me how to open Local Folder Mail Data DAT files.

If you are referring to the eM Client hidden database local folder files, “you are not meant to open those manually” and could potentially cause corruption in them if you do edit them.

If you are referring to .dat email attachments in eM Client, then save them to your hard-disk folder, and then right click on them and open with Notepad on Windows or Textmate on Mac to edit.

Note: Make a copy of the .dat file before you edit it.

Thanks cyberzork. Just to explain, I finished the reset / refresh on my daughter’s laptop. I am now at home some 200 miles distant and was catching up on emails on my own laptop. Having moved a couple emails into local folders I later deleted them in error. My emails are backed up daily though I am unsure if the timing of the backup was before or after moving the mail to local folders. I was hoping to find the deleted mail in the backup folders and maybe restore them. I do not know if the daily automatic backup applies to local folder content however.

You would either then need to do a full eM Client restore to get that Local Folder message back from a recent eM Client backup via “Menu / File / Restore”

Or you can do a Partial Restore from either an eM Client backup.zip file or from the hidden database folder if you don’t have backup.zip files as per my post in the following thread.

Also see the following eM Client support page on restoring a backup including restoring a partial backup “part way down the following page”.
