Is Preview PDF safe?

I frequently get spam with a PDF attached “invoice.” If I mistakenly hover over the icon and Preview PDF is activated, am I exposed to any virus in the bogus PDF?

I wouldn’t think hovering over a pdf & previewing would normally do anything, and you would normally “have to fully open the attachment” to initiate a virus or malware etc, but you never know.

Peeps out there can be sneaky with virus and malware infected attachments in emails so even previewing a .pdf I suspect, would use your user temp folder while doing, and could possibly initiate something.

So if you are getting regular spam with pdf invoice attachments in eM Client, “then I wouldnt preview or open that” and advise to put a permanent block on that senders email address or block the senders domain or block on the header info using the blacklist option either via the “Menu / Rules” up to V9 or via the “Menu / Settings / Blacklist” menu in the latest V10.

Apart from that you could also setup a block on that sender in your mailbox online. Your online technical support can assist you with that.

Great question!

I would appreciate more insights from the developers on this matter. While I believe the program handles it well, there’s still a potential safety hazard. Unfortunately, blocking these messages isn’t always feasible for me, as the email addresses, topics, and domains keep changing.

Do you know if it is possible to disable the PDF preview and so it works like it did in v9?

@tobirunner

Unfortunately, blocking these messages isn’t always feasible for me, as the email addresses, topics, and domains keep changing.

You can create “custom rules” in eM Client using the header information to block senders who keep changing all the time.

See my thread link below with posts from @Gary and @sunriseal on creating example custom links to block by the header.

The preview is sandboxed, so it will be OK.
