Using eM Client with my German mail provider (posteo), I ran regularly into the trouble that I get the following message:
“A2 NO [UNAVAILABLE] Maximum number of connections from user+IP exceeded (mail_max_userip_connections=30)”
I assume that this is connected to the number of directories eM has to scan during the IMAP sync process. But neither my mobil nor my tablet have problems with the provider. Both of them are set to 10 connections max.
Can I set this value somewhere within eM? Or is this problem rooted somewhere else?
go to Tools - Settings - General - General and there is Synchronization block and there change “Synchronize items every … minutes” to higher value, try 15 minutes and more, it should work.
If not then write back here and I will take a deeper look at it.
I have tried it with 15 and 20 minutes. But as soon as I press “Synchronize” after a few moments the error message appears and I am forced to enter name and password.
go to tools - settings - advanced and mark off IMAP under your account, then restart emclient, make steps that lead to this issue and after it send me those logs to: [email protected] together with this URL: https://discourse.emclient.com/emclient/to…
The email server is running dovecot with max 15 connections per IP.
I am using em Client with the current account configuration for more than a year, the ‘max connections’ issue only appeared sporadically during the last month.
I believe this issue appears after the PC wakes up from hibernation (over night). Could it be that em Client covers the IMAP server with an unlimited number of connections after wake-up from hibernation? Running Windows 8, 64bit.
Anyways, a config option to limit max nr of connections to IMAP or automatic limit after receiving server message would be great
As far as I know, no changes have been done so far.
For me, a workaround (mostly) did the trick:
My “problem” is that I have my laptop with eM client, my mobile and the tablet running within the same WLAN (as usally when beeing at home ). I now discovered that I have set on my tablet and my mobile a lot of subdirectories to “push”. But since I only use them as storage folders which do not get updated by new mails I revoked the IMAP status of them and let them be updated by “normal” update cycles.
So I have now only 3 or 4 folders be marked as PUSH. I assume this reduces somehow the number of connections. Anyhow, since then the error within eM Client comes a lot less often.

thanks for the tips. I already set all folders, including the inbox, on both my phone and tablet to update every 30 min. no push folders.
And my PC is set to check every 15 min. still the moment I open eM client my mail is collected once and immediately the error appears. I then need to close the eM wait about 30 min. and the whole process repeats itself.
I don’t understand, max connections is limited to 3. There should be no issue with maximum connections.
Can I ask if you are experiencing this with another email client (if you have used in past) or you are connecting from same ip to this email server from multiple devices?
also limitation on synchronization errors are server side, my outlook.com account will cause error if I set it lower than 15 minutes. Google is 10 or 15 minutes also. Dunno about other email services, it could be limited locally.
The problem started after switching from Outlook 2013 to eM a few days ago.
Now both eM and Outlook are giving the same error on both my laptop and my desktop (I don’t use Outlook active, only started it for testing purposes)
For testing I have now switched off mail on my laptop and tablet.
ATM I’m only checking mail from my phone and desktop from the same IP number.
I have submitted a ticket to my hosting provider to check things on there side.
I think that it will sound like excuse, but if outlook is causing problems now too then it will be problem somewhere else and not in eM Client.
Anyway you can send me IMAP and Network communication logs (tools - settings - advanced check both of these, apply and restart client. Then simulate issue and send me those logs and then you can turn logging off).
logs can be sent to [email protected] and please for easy lookup send me this topic’s url in subject.
in these logs there might be useful informations about this.
AFAIK this is not a technical bug / issue. My mail provider explained that their mail system only allows a certain number of imap connections for one IP address.
Means that if you have tablet, mobile and pc, each of these devices (better: the mail clients on these devices) open a certain number of permantly open imap connections. And the sum of these connections must not greater than the defined number from the mail provider.
So maybe eM opens more connections than Outlook. And if you now start Outlook in parallel, the problem with the open connections will be even greater.
Like I mentioned before. ATM I’m only checking mail on my phone and PC
Laptop and iPAD are switched off (and have been for a few hours now)
Also Outlook isn’t running either.
I can switch off mail checking on my phone to rule out everything, but again that only polls every 30 minutes (eM every 15 min.)
I really want to make this work, I really like eM but I’m running out of ideas, besides changing provider.
ok, I will read them later (today or tomorrow morning and will respond here so everyone participating in this thread will know more as soon as possible.
