Is there a way to remove the notice showing the new emails in that box since it’s last been opened? The bright red notice is distracting (looks like an error) and prevents me from seeing the total unread messages in that box, since it takes its place, until I click on it again. I get a lot of emails so it’s basically as if they removed the unread email notice completely since I’m always seeing the red notice instead.

Under Settings / Mail / Categories there are three sections: General, Display and Custom Rules. Under the Display section, there is an option to enable/disable “Show number of recent messages” and separately “Show number of unread messages”
Thanks, I was able to resolve it but it was a bit different than expected. I was able to locate your suggested setting (Settings > Mail > Categories on version 10.0.3266) but unchecking it didn’t remove the red recent notices. I searched “recent” in the settings and located Mail > Read > “Show counter for recent messages instead of unread” which finally removed them.
