I have just upgraded to version 10 and am trying to embrace the concept of categories. I do not know how Emclient assigns categories or how they can be changed. My only option seems to be disabling the feature which is a shame and a waste of effort. Perhaps I am missing something. I do not want to have to check each category in case the wrong category has been assigned.

eM Client “uses an algorithm that determine the message categories”. We don’t know on this forum exactly how it works, only that you can change the message category if it’s not right.

If there is a message/s that is going into a Category “where you don’t want it to go”, then you can just “Drag it” to the Category Tab you want.
After you drag it to the new category, a popup message will appear asking to confirm the Category change and shortcut key options you can use as well in future.
You can also "Right Click on the “Message Subject” in any Category Tab, and then click “Category” on the menu, and select the Category you want it to go in future.
Either way. you will get the Prompt appear for you to confirm the change.
If you don’t want a category or any categories, just “Right click in a blank area next to a Category” and deselect whatever you don’t want in the Category Tab on the menu.
You can also hide the Categories bar if you choose as well.
Thanks for the prompt and helpful reply. I am still experimenting with the new features. I am unable to drag a message to the category tab. Also, is it possible to create my own categories? I seem to recall reading somewhere that this could be done.
Im not sure why you carn’t drag messages to differant categories. I carn’t replicate that issue on PC or Mac using the latest release V10.0.3266.
If you don’t have that version you can download it via the release history page. If you do upgrade to that, close eM Client before upgrading.
If you already have that version, then maybe trying closing eM Client and rebooting your computer. Might be a memory resident problem.
Also, is it possible to create my own categories.
As far as i know you can only choose the categories in Settings as per the below screenshot.
I have the latest version and have rebooted the computer. I still cannot drag the message to another tab. I can get round this by right clicking and using the category option. It is a shame that the categories cannot be changed as, to me, this makes them of little value. I will continue to experiment with all the new features. Many thanks.

When you drag a message to another category tab, “when it’s directly over the tab” then let your mouse button go" and you should then get the confirmation popup message appear.
Thanks for this. I have now got this to work but did not find it intuitive. When I dragged the message over the tab, an icon of an envelope appeared. This did not change when I hovered over the tab so I thought nothing was happening. Nevertheless, the options presented are of little help There is no way to ensure that this and future messages from this source are placed in the Primary tab. The category options do not work for me and you have said that they cannot be changed. I will continue to explore.

When you see the icon of an envelope appear over the category tab “then at that point release your mouse button”. You will then get the category change popup confirmation message window appear.
Yes would be good if eM Client “could change the icon slightly when it was over the category tab”. My bro also thought the icon would have changed “to then know you can release your mouse”.
There is no way to ensure that this and future messages from this source are placed in the Primary tab.
When you press “yes on the category change popup confirmation message that appears” as per the screenshot example below, that will then “always move in future that senders specific messages to the Primary tab category” or whatever category tab you dragged it to.
