you wrote: if you see password in the general tab, then you should add the account again. But when I add the account automatically, I cannot select POP, only IMAP. IMAP is not an option for me, I need POP. Will it still work or not?
I Thunderbird, I can choose normally whether I want POP or IMAP even in the automatic setup.
Edit 17.09: So far it is still working. However, I use a password that MS generates automatically. Especially for apps. Maybe that’s why it works. Also, MS never said they were going to stop POP or not?
If you have a Microsoft personal “Hotmail, Live or Outlook” account that is now “only setup as IMAP” in eM Client via the automatic account wizard as per Microsoft changes which started in August 2022 and finalized as of the 16th of Sept 2024.
See the following eM Client support forum link on that.
So if you have previously been using a Microsoft personal account with a POP setup in eM Client with a legacy username and password, that will no longer work, and you “now need to change to an IMAP” setup via the automatic account wizard in “Menu / Accounts” which uses OAuth 2.
So once you have your same MS account re-setup as IMAP, then drag / move all your existing POP messages and any custom POP message folders to your IMAP account. Then once you are certain they are all moved over, then remove your old POP account. You can see when that process is completed in Show Operations via clicking the drop-down on the right of Refresh top left.
Lastly before doing anything, make a manual backup of eM Client via “Menu / Backup” incase you need to restore for any reason. You can also see when the backup is complete in Show Operations.
you just ignored everything I wrote and gave a copy and paste answer. If Em Client no longer works, I’ll probably have to switch to Thunderbird, which works fine. Let’s wait and see.
Looks like it is now enforced. And it seems we can’t have Outook as a POP service in EMClient.
I had to migrate my outlook account to Thunderbird too in order to have it POP… Alongside with my old wanadoo/orange.fr pop account EMClient can’t handle anymore. I think I’ll move my professional mail to Thunderbird too, if EMClient can’t provide stuff it provided easily years ago…
Agree. EM has been absolutely fine for years, but they seem to have given up on many features.
So sad.
And now, after the migration, I find I can’t configurate properly the SMTP for Outlook in Thunderbird, while POP works fine.
Time to phase out the MS mail accounts.
Yes, I’m really sad. They had years and didn’t implement oauth2 for pop. I really enjoyed using Em Client.
To add OAuth2 for POP accounts would be alot of work and cost just “for only a small amount of users”, so wouldn’t really make good business sense to do that being eg: most global Microsoft "Hotmail, Live and Outlook users would have already moved to IMAP, Exchange or Office 365 years ago, and most users also “want all their messages and message folders on all their devices” and not just in their Inbox like POP.
Now if you have avoided moving from a MS POP account to MS IMAP, due to online cloud storage space is limited and you don’t want to buy more cloud space, then eM Client has options where you can eg: automatically archive email older than X days to a local folder within eM Client, Or in V10, you can now also create a separate Data file (.emdf) on your harddisk (like an Outlook .pst) file to store old mail which can then either be mounted permanently in eM Client or manually opened anytime if you only want old emails sometimes.
T-bird uses OAuth2 and can receive outlook.com on POP, as I verify now, and emclient also uses OAuth2. So I still fail to understand whether emclient declining POP for outlook.com addresses is more of a preference for emclient, vs a necessity that emclient is forced into. The context is my trying to decide between T-bird and emclient today, so it is not an idle question in that sense.
