When search produces a resulting email, when I click on the email, is there anyway to see what folder it is in?
The search function is folder specific. So, the email that you find by a search is in the folder that you are searching. Am I misunderstanding your question?
I donāt think I was clear, sorry. If I am searching ALL folders to find a particular email, rather than searching an individual folder, how can I know which folder the email(s) was found in?
For example, in some email clients the folder containing the selected email will be highlighted when the message is selected, others will show a list of search results showing a column listing the folder(s) that a message is contained in.
Letās say I am searching all folders for the text Rory, and the results show 5 emails containing Rory, which may be in several different folders. If I click on one of those messages, is there any way to know which folder it is being stored in?
Hope this is more clear. Thank you!
I figured it outā¦if I choose the layout with the messages on the bottom, I can customize the columns in the message list to include the folder. I previously had the messages on the right to better able to read them on a laptop screen. Easy enough to switch back and forth. Thank you for your assistance and hope this helps someone else.
Or in the layout with the message to the right you can click the drop-down arrow next to āMarkā above the message and look for the checkmark next to the folder (this is in the Alpha version of eM 7, but I assume that it is the same in V.6).
Thanks Norman, I have not purchased yet, still evaluating so am working with V6. I do not see a drop-down arrow or āMarkā above the message or a checkmark next to the folder. Attached a snip above the messageā¦am I looking in the right place?
Here is a screen shot of your email with the drop-down menu of āMarkā open. I hope you can see that the āInboxā location is checked. This may be new to V.7. I donāt remember seeing it in V.6. Let me know.
Thanks,
Norman
Hello again:
I just looked at V.6 on another computer. The āMarkā drop-down option does not exist in v.6. On the other hand, the āFolderā column option for the message list does not exist in V.7. I looked at your above solution for your problem in v.6 and it works very well, but it does not work in v.7. Iāll have to drop them a note to see if there is a reason for this.
Norman
Thank you Norman, I think I would have been dismayed if I ordered and installed and found that feature missing, soĀ now I know what to expect, as that is a feature I use all the time.
On another note, I understand that em client does not have the ability to run different profiles like Outlook and Thunderbird, as I donāt wish to have all my email addresses in the one interface. And I understand that I also canāt have more than one instance of em client running. I guess I will have to install on different computers. Do you have any thoughts about that? Appreciate your time. Thank you.Ā Ā ~Linda
Hi Linda,
I suspect, although Iām not certain, that locating a message after a search in v.7 differs from v.6 because of the introduction of āConversationsā in v.7. Messages from more than one folder may be in a single āconversationā (inbox, sent folder, etc.) and I suppose this messes up the ability to point to a single folder. Although the method of identifying the folder by looking at the information in the āMarkā drop-down list is still a little rough, it actually accomplishes the task quite well and has the advantage of working with the message list displayed to the left of rather than above the message. I prefer that configuration.
In regard to the other issue, I do not know of any way to have multiple profiles with eM Client. I have only two accounts and have no problem with the single combined interface. For a short time I ran a third account that I wanted entirely separate from my other accounts, so I just used Outlook for that. I also know that many people run multiple accounts on eM Client without difficulty.
Norman
Hello Linda,
this feature is not missing, you just need to have the Folder column visible in your layout.
Right click the top line of the messages layout, choose āColumns configurationā¦ā and add āFolderā to the visible columns. This column will show the name of the folder itās in and if you hover over it, it will show the mail account it belongs to.
As for Norman, please try to minimize the discussion about the version 7 Alpha as this it is not public yet and many things have changed compared to version 6. The feature you describe is the Google labels support and has nothing to do with Folder search.
Regards,
Olivia
Thank you Olivia, as you see above, I discovered that I could do that if I changed to the layout with āmessages on the bottom.āĀ Are you saying this feature can be integrated into the layout with āmessages on the rightā as well? If so, I donāt see where you are saying to right-click the top line of the messages layout if the layout is with āmessages on the right.ā
In order to purchase em, It would be important to me that this feature (storage location identification) be available in one form or another in future versions. My primary email server is not gmail so my my emails are NOT stored with Google labels, nor do I view in āconversations,ā which I really dislikeā¦I prefer to see my emails individually, not in conversations. My emails are stored in folders as they are in v6. That being said, I have read in several places that v7 is enhancing the āconversationā method of managing emails, so please let me know if v7 will allow the traditional method of view emails (not in conversation mode) as well. I do not object to tagging them with labels as gmail does.
As a software consultant and trainer, I canāt help evaluating apps as thoroughly as possible to be sure they meet my needs (or my clientās needs) prior to purchase. I would appreciate if you would let me know if v7 is going in a much different direction that what I am working with in v6.
Thank you!
Hello Linda,
if you do not use Conversations or gmail, then you will be able to use the search just as I described now. Just make the Folder column visible as you did in v6. (This feature wont be possible with the Conversations view enabled, seeing as different parts of the conversations could be in different folders, but that wonāt be your problem. The Conversation view can be, of course, completely disabled in Settings in version 7).
You can enable the columns even with the Message detail displayed on the right, it is just not the default.Try dragging the side of the detail to make more space for the messages view and the the columns should appear once there is enough space for them.
As for version 7, we mostly just added new features and didnāt remove much, the direction in which eM Client is going hasnāt changed, and the biggest changes were done in the inner workings of the program and GUI to make it faster and more user-friendly. You can read about added features on our Blog and even see some screenshots.

Olivia
Thank you for the clarification Olivia.
