What's going on with emClient?

I’ve been using emClient on Desktop for many years, was happy that there is a Mac-version when switching to Mac and even happier when a mobile client was added to the suite.
It is now my primary e-mail tool.
However the last couple of weeks it’s starting to crumble… The app crashes on startup on one(?!?( of my two activated Macs. A reinstall and removal of the AppData fixed it for a couple of hours but now it’s back.

The mobile client has been great for a number of months and suddenly the calendar show up blank, again a reinstall fixed it for a couple of hours and it’s blank again.

This behaviour started just a few weeks ago. Am I alone? Is anyone else experiencing these issues recently? Does it have anything to do with my Calendars?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

/Nik

I seem to have narrowed all my problems down to a faulty calendar entry in my GMail default Calendar:
System.FormatException: Format_InvalidStringWithValue, −1

How can I find the faulty entry?

I also have a problem. emClient keeps on freezing. I have a macbook pro Apple M4 Max. External screen (Apple or other brand), internal screen. No difference.

Hmm, that’s strange. I’m not experiencing that at all with one desktop and two laptops (varying M1 and M2 chips). I’m running v10.3.2622 on all of them under macOS 15.6.1.

I’ve had some periodic hangs in the past, but far fewer since some of the updates. Usually the worst I see is a hang for a couple of minutes, such as after waking from sleep, and maybe even the crash reporter kicks in on some occasions, but then eM Client comes back to life without further problems. I don’t need to Force Quit after all and the application does not crash. So far it’s seeming very stable for me.

Are you running the latest version of eM Client and of macOS? Which CPUs and how much RAM are you using? It would be useful to see if there are any common factors.

Google Gemini helped me somewhat along the way:

You are experiencing a crash and sync failure in eM Client related to your Google Calendar.

  • Error message:
Format_InvalidStringWithValue, -1
System.FormatException
at LoadWeekDayNumArray
  • What this means: eM Client is trying to read a recurrence rule from one of your Google Calendar events. That rule contains an invalid value (-1) in the BYDAY field of the recurrence definition.
    • In iCalendar/ICS format, recurrence rules (RRULE) define how events repeat.
    • BYDAY should list days of the week (e.g. MO, TU, WE) and sometimes week positions (e.g. 1MO for the first Monday).
    • The value -1 is invalid and cannot be parsed by eM Client, which triggers the crash.
  • Root cause: At least one event in your Google Calendar has a corrupted or malformed recurrence rule — often caused by importing from another calendar app or service.
  • Consequence: eM Client fails to synchronize the entire calendar, or crashes on startup when it tries to load calendar data.

Hi, our team looked into your crash report. We have some ideas, but we should be able to find more from a calendar repair log. Please follow these steps:

  1. Go to eM Client > Preferences > Advanced.
  2. Enable logging for Google Calendar under the affected account.
  3. Restart eM Client.
  4. Right-click the calendar folder, go to Properties > Repair, and click the Repair button.
  5. Once it finishes re-syncing, go back to > Advanced and click Send Logs.
  6. Send them to [email protected]

We’re really sorry you’re having these issues!

Well, the computer that doesn’t work crashes on appstart with a long errorlog and the instructions above does not apply to the mobile app but I did the above on the working computer (that completes sync with an error message) and sent it to you just now.

Thanks in advance!
Nik

Try changing language to English in the eM Client Preferences.

If the application won’t even launch, change the language in the System Settings/Language&Region by adding the application to the Applications list at the bottom of the page.

Thanks for the logs @NikJensie. See @aconcagua’s advice – because it appears related to certain language versions of the app – and we’ll also be looking into preparing a system fix.

Hello, has a solution for this problem been found. I’m encountering a very similar problem when installing the latest version of EMClient (English/Belgium) to a new Windows 11 notebook. Calender loops between syncing fine, than erases everything.

Hi, this sounds like a different error, please:

  1. Go to Menu > Settings > Advanced.
  2. Enable logging for Google Calendar (or CalDAV / Exchange Services) under the affected account.
  3. Restart eM Client.
  4. After the calendar events disappear, go back to > Advanced and click Send Logs.
  5. Add [email protected] as a recipient.
