What version do I neeed

I have been stuck on Outlook for over 20 years and have hung on to 2007 since 2008. I started using it because I set up my own domain and email service so I could hand out bespoke email addresses for each site I signed up to. Reason being I was getting constant phishing and scam emails as well as calls, and by issuing individual email addresses I could tell which sites were handing out or “losing” my contact details. And over the years it revealed that big names and financial institutions are by far the most problematic. But I digress.

My email service is a catch all box with a white list pass and outlook sweeps the remaining emails from the inbox into outlook 2007. I just go in to the webmail service and review junk mail once a week, in case of incorrect spam detection or quicker if I don’t get a response.

That said, my service allows me to send emails with any defined email address under my domain name without having to set up an account with my email service provider, meaning [email protected] and [email protected] can be sent out on Outlook 2007 without having to set up on the server. I just have to set the correct SMTP settings in Outlook per sending account.

I just use one account in outlook 2007 set to login in to the server to sweep all incoming emails. In effect unlimited outgoing email accounts as long the outlook it is ******@xyz.com and the account in outlook is set to outgoing only. This is all run from 1 dedicated PC

Windows 11 is messing with outlook 2007, causing random “not implemented” issues after updates so I guess it’s time for a change and need to get used to something else.

Questions now are

Are emails kept locally or cloud? I don’t want cloud storage.
Can EM Client replace my Outlook setup?
If so and what version is required, Free or Personal?
And if I switch back to Outlook for whatever reason, can I import emails and attachments back into Outlook?

Any insight would be appreciated

If you setup a IMAP, Exchange, Office 365 or iCloud account, then your emails “are all in the cloud” as per the nature of those type of mail accounts.

However you can setup eg: automatic archiving to “download email older than x days to a local folder” in eM Client to save space on the server if you don’t want all your email in the cloud mailbox.

You can also eg: create an external (.emdf) data file like an Outlook (.pst) file to “move messages from your Cloud mailbox to a local folder” on your computer hard disk which then can be mounted / unmounted as you need to save save space on your server if you don’t want all your email in the cloud mailbox.

Or if your mailbox provider still supports POP “with a legacy username and password”, then you can setup & download all your emails into the Inbox and clear them off the server after x days you set.

Can EM Client replace my Outlook setup?

Yes eM Client is a replacement client, where alot of ex Outlook users do use it everyday.

If so and what version is required, Free or Personal?

The free version “only allows two accounts” and has limited features after the initial 30day trial as per the pricing page when you scroll down the page.

The personal paid version allows you to install on 3 devices with the full features.

See the Licensing page for the difference between a free and personal & business licenses.

And if I switch back to Outlook for whatever reason, can I import emails and attachments back into Outlook?

Yes you can export your emails with attachments as standard (.eml) message files that can be imported back into Outlook if you need to.

If you need to know anymore specific details in the trial, you can email [email protected]
