What exactly are identity credentials?

What exactly are identity credentials and how do I enter them? They obviously are not user name and password, those are under the “Use these credentials”.

I have searched the web for the definition of “identify credentials” and only find it referenced by em Client. I upgraded from Version 7 to Version 8 and lost EVERYTHING, the upgrade didn’t work. Now I must recreate everything from scratch and I need to understand what this credential is.

Identity credentials are the username and password.

Usually you just enter that once in the General tab, or when you setup the account, and then the IMAP/POP3/SMTP tabs have Use identity credentials selected. That means they use the same username and password entered in the General tab.

Sometimes you may want to setup a specialized account that uses different credentials for IMAP and SMTP. In that case you would select Use these credentials, and enter a separate username and password for that section.
