way to use read receipts without the other party knowing?

I was told by support that when I request a read receipt, the person on the other end (the person I sent the email to) gets a notification to send it back, but I know for a fact that some people don’t even get the request and it STILL sends me a message they opened the email. That’s how I like it. Any way in settings to guarantee they don’t get a notification, but I still get notified it was open? Why would some get it and some not?

This actually depends on the recipient’s webmail/email client. You can’t make sure that the recipient receives the notification - some mail clients show it, some don’s. For example eM Client protects the user’s privacy and always asks before sending any receive/read receipt.
