I am using em Client for a while and recently got a very strange problem: I am travelling since July 27, and whenever I try to use a VPN because I do not trust the Wi-Fi provider, I get the same result as many others: connection error. But my situation is very interesting. I host my sites on my VPS server and checked all settings there and nothing is blocking the IP addresses I was connected with. And the strangest thing is that some email addresses from the same domain connect and others do not. I have over 15 email addresses I monitor and the problem exists in all my 5 domains.
If I close and open my client, another set of emails will get a connection error.
Webmail works with the same IPs.
This problem is definitely coming from the eM Client and not from VPN or mail server.

Hey @ashmtl
I am sorry that you have issues, however, I find it difficult to accept your noted statement:
This problem is definitely coming from the eM Client and not from VPN or mail server.
I also use VPN throughout Europe, North Africa, Middle & Far East
all on a regular basis and do not experience any issues using eMC
without or with Surfshark VPN that is connected most of the time
on WiFi and or Ethernet dependant upon service availability.
If you want help in the resolution of your issue I suggest you contact
your VPN provider and also give details here of where you are connecting
from and the VPN location/s you use.
¡Buena suerte!

I have tried from Armenia, France, Canada, Belgium. Same result. Using the Bitdefender VPN. Have no issues with any other application, except eM Client.

Unfortunately VPNs can interfere with many mail clients, and as @skybat advised need to be configured to allow the mail client to work.
So contact Bitdefender VPN, support to see how to configure it to allow eM Client access.

Note: - There is also a user on this forum @ekalb that uses Bitdefender VPN and says it works ok. See what he advises in the thread below. So might give you some clues to help with that..

Thank you, I di read French. Bypassing the VPN (tunnelling) is not a smart thing to do, because the idea of the VPN is not to use the local Wi-Fi provider like the ones in a cafe or hotel. If I bypass the VPN the login info can be intercepted by the router provider.
I will try your advise and contact Bitdefender. Will publish the results if I will get any solution.

Have followed the instructions but nothing was changed. If this is a DNS or VPN issue, why only 12 accounts are blocked out of 17 I have configured in my eM Client? Some domains have 50% blocked only, i.e. 3 accounts connect when other 3 on the same domain do not connect. All domains are on the same VPS server with InMotion and are configured exactly the same way. And why 2 years ago when I was travelling around the world for 1 year I didn’t have this issue? All this makes me to think that there was an update in eM Client that has changed the behaviour of the app.

Hey @ashmtl
I note that you can connect with Webmail which operates differently
from an email client;
You do not say if you can connect without any issues with eMC if you
do so without using VPN; what happens?
Who is your ISP?
What version of eMC do you now have?
¡Buena suerte!

Without VPN I can have all my accounts connected and synced. With VPN outlook and THunderbird works, eM Client doesn’t. Right now my ISP is SFR in France. I will check again when when I get back to Montreal. Will also check in South America in September.
Just conducted another experiment: used my cellphone for tethering. It is connected to the same SFR under LaposteMobile name. When used Montreal or Bordeaux as VPN location, got only 11 accounts not connecting. Through my own router I had 12. Bitdefender still didn’t come with an answer and InMotion is saying that nothing is blocked on their end.
I surrender.
