.vcf / vCard file open or import crashes eM Client

Whenever I try to import a vCard file, eM Client crashes repeatably and reproducibly. Either via Windows right-click “Open with…” or via eM Client “Menu > File > Open…” or “Menu > File > Import…”.

eM Client version 9.0.1317 (aa3aaca)

Windows 11 Home, Version 21H2, OS build 22000.556, Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22000.556.0

Anonymized content of the file (Notepad++ says the file is “UTF-8” and “Linux LF” encoded, each line ends with a LF):

BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:2.1
TEL;PREF;WORK;VOICE;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:+12 (0)34 / 123 45 6 - 789

EMAIL;INTERNET:[email protected]

END:VCARD

The vcf seems to be OK, but this may be because of a Windows 11 bug.

Close eM Client, then open it again in Windows 8 Compatibility mode and see if you can reproduce the issue.

To do that:

  • On the Windows Start Menu, find the eM Client entry and by right-click choose Open File Location.
  • In the window that opens, right-click on the eM Client shortcut and choose Properties.
  • In the window that opens, choose the Compatibility tab.
  • Then select “Run this program in compatibility mode for”
  • Select Windows 8 and click on OK.

Now open eM Client using that Start Menu entry you just edited and try the import again.
