vCards importing into Local Contacts instead of Gmail Contacts

When I click on a vCard file to import it into my Gmail account via eM Client, I receive the error message, “No suitable folder was found. Do you want to enable the Local Folders and complete the action?”

I went ahead and enabled Local Folders, but this causes vCard files to be imported into the Local Contacts store by default, not Gmail Contacts. I can manually redirect the contact to my Gmail Contacts folder, but this seems like an unnecessary step.

Is there a way to define Gmail Contacts as the default contacts store and bypass Local Contacts all together?

When you Import your vCard file, on the second screen you have to click “Select folder” and then click your “Gmail contacts” before clicking Finish as per the eM Client help F1 documentation.

Is there a way to define Gmail Contacts as the default contacts store.

To set your default contacts, see @gary post below in the following thread.

Thank you for the response, but the post you linked to is in accurate when opening vCards with eM Client. When I open a vCard file and save the Contact, the Local Contacts store is the default even if I have my Gmail Contacts folder is selected. I’m not sure if this is a bug or intended behavior. See attached screenshot.

When I open a vCard file and save the Contact, the Local Contacts store is the default even if I have my Gmail Contacts folder is selected.

Go to the “Contacts section of eM Client” and select “Contacts under your Gmail account”, and make sure Local Contacts “is not selected” as in the example screenshot below.

Then if i create and save a new Contact, it defaults to my Gmail account as in the example below.

Note:- By rights it should actually bring up “Contacts” under the Gmail account instead of Gmail All Contacts, so there appears to be a bug in the new contact window, but otherwise “it does bring up the Gmail account Contacts” by default and not Local folder Contacts.

If you then Import a .vCard file “select the folder where the Contacts will be stored” on the second import screen, it will then bring up your Gmail Contacts by default as in the example below.

There was no Contacts folder under Gmail’s All Contacts label so I created it. I then clicked on the new Gmail Contacts folder so it would be selected and tried both double-clicking on the vCard file and manually importing it. In both instances, the local “Contacts” folder was still the default folder. This definitely seems to be a bug.

When you add a Gmail account into eM Client they normally “all by default have a Contacts” menu already there under your Gmail account where eM Client picks that up from the following Google Contacts page. So something must have gone wrong when you added the account.

So if your online Google contacts “also looks like the below screenshot example”, then i would suggest to go in eM Client to “Menu / Accounts” and remove your Gmail account, and then re-add your Gmail account via the Add Account automatic wizard at the top. Then once re-added see if you have a Contacts under your Gmail account “in the Contacts section of eM Client”.

If you still don’t, then update what version of eM Client you are using and if you have Windows or Mac and what OS version.

I completely removed and re-added my Gmail account. The default Gmail Contacts folder was not synced.

As a test, I added my wife’s Gmail account, which as never been used with eM Client, and got the same result. The default Gmail Contacts folder was not synced.

I am already running the latest version of eM Client 10.1.4588 for Windows.

The same behavior is happening on both my home desktop and my work laptop.

When you add the Gmail account (near the end of the automatic wizard where a prompt appears to allow eM Client access to your Gmail account), “do you see the Gmail Contacts as one of the selected / checked options” ? Eg: It should show Gmail, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks etc.

Contacts is one of the options. It is checked, and all of my contacts are synced under All Contacts. There is just no Contacts subfolder that you indicated should be present to import vCards. All other Contacts functions are working normally.

all of my contacts are synced under All Contacts.

Ok then you just select All Contacts in eM Client and make sure “nothing else is selected” and then when you create a new contact or save or import to contacts All Contacts should be already selected / highlighted by default .

If you already have All Contacts selected and nothing else, then other users on this forum hopefully might have other ideas. Normally whatever you have selected is the default.
