V11 upgrade

Hi,

I was trying to update my eM Client but it seemed to already be version 11 ???

A panel appeared on screen and almost immediately the progress bar indicated the task was half done. After half an hour or so, the progress bar had proceeded no further and for other purposes I had to reboot the computer. As no progress was apparent I assumed the update had failed, I rebooted and then accessing eM Client again I got the message below:

eM Client Backup Tool

System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path ‘C:\Users\peter\Documents\eM Client\backup_202610121142.zip’ is denied.

at System.IO.File.Delete(String path)

at MailClient.Storage.Backup.BackupFilesCollection.RemoveOldBackups(Int32 preserveCount)

at MailClient.DbBackup.FormBackup.Backup(CancellationToken cancellationToken)

at MailClient.DbBackup.FormBackup.<>c__DisplayClass27_0.<MainForm_Load>b__0(Object a, DoWorkEventArgs b)

at System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker.WorkerThreadStart(Object argument)

I feel that there should be some method of indicating that the update of the backup is still progressing rather than just appearing to have locked up.

Trusting you can help

If you had a free personal use license or paid lifetime upgrade license eg: V9/10 then you would have got a prompt to update to the new eM Client 11. Or if you had an earlier eg: MSIX Windows app installer, it will automatically update itself without you having to install the newer update.

System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path ‘C:\Users\peter\Documents\eM Client\backup_202610121142.zip’ is denied.

Thats saying you either don’t have write access to the eM Client folder in your Documents folder for unknown reasons. Or the backup.zip file is readonly and it carnt be overridden.

So try then create a new eg: eM Client Backup folder inside your “Documents” folder and then go to “Menu / Settings / General / Backup” and change the backup location path to the new backup location and Save Settings.

Then “close and reopen eM Client” and first try run a manual backup via “Menu / Backup” and see if that creates the dated backup.zip file in that new folder. If that works, then you should be right from then on with the automatic periodic backup going to the new folder.

Alternativily try “renaming your current eM Client folder in Documents” to eg: eM Client-Old. Then create a new eM Client folder in your Documents folder. Then “close and reopen eM Client” and then first try run a manual backup via “Menu / Backup” and see if that creates the dated backup.zip file in that new folder. If that works, then you should be right from then on with the automatic periodic backup going to the newly created eM Client folder.

Lastly if you still get the same error, shutdown and reboot your computer and try again.

This has to do with the security settings in win 11. For some reasons something changed with the update to emclient v11.
Go to the “windows security centre”. Then click “protection history” (“Schutzverlauf”). Click on one of the last messages (maybe you get a security warning. you have to be admin on win 11). In the message you will find under “Blocked app or process” the “MailClient.exe” and the protected folder "%userprofile%\Documents\eM Client". Then click on the “action”-dropdown menu and select “allow on this device” (“Auf Gerät zulassen”). After that try to manually start the backup like cyberzork mentioned. That should work.

Thank you for your replies.
Before I get into committing myself to your suggestions, does this mean that my backed up files from before today are now lost? That would be rather annoying to put it politely.

And whose suggestions should I try to use? I’m no expert but they don’t seem to me to be wholly compatible? And if both, in which order?

Thanks
