Using outlook.com calendar

Em client has been recommended to me as an alternative to Outlook once it changes to new Outlook. I have four email accounts on two domains that I own that I have been able to set up just fine. However, in Outlook on my PC I also have an outlook.com account set up and I use that for my calendar, tasks and contacts. Despite spending hours today looking through the forums and trying different ways to set it up, I have been unable to successfully connect this account such that I can use calendar, tasks and contacts from it.
I wonder whether my approach is just wrong and I need to set up the software differently to Outlook in order to use the calendar and contacts and tasks. Or can Em client simply not access the outlook.com account for calendar, contacts and tasks? What is the best way of retaining this functionality and being able to access it across devices and in a browser?

You setup the account by going to Menu > Accounts and clicking on Add Account. Enter the address in the automatic Setup. Once the account is setup, it will sync messages, calendas and contacts.

If contacts and calendars are not syncing, probably the AirSync service is not enabled. Go to Menu > Accounts and click on the General tab for that account. Scroll down to Services and make sure the AirSync service is ticked. If you don’t want to receive messages, you can untick the IMAP service.

Thanks for the quick answer. Unfortunately, none of that has worked. I have this account set up in three ways: mail only, calendar and contacts only, and all three. They have IMAP and SMTP checked, AirSync checked, and all three checked respectively. Only the one with mail only can make a connection. I have tried various ways to set up the accounts, including the “correct” way described by you in other threads where people could not connect like me, and I have tried each way multiple times, but the software cannot connect if Calendar and Contacts are involved.

I think I will give up. I have now tried every way to set up the account, using the main account name and aliases and having 4 different browsers as my default in case that was the problem. None of them have worked.
I have also seen that I would have to pay something like £100 to use this on my devices. That seems a lot to me in my current situation, so I probably wouldn’t proceed anyway.
I would still be interested to find out if anyone has a solution in case I change my mind in the future, or Outlook becomes so incredibly bad I have no choice.

This is an ongoing issue that em team does not recognise.

I have this problem too and, additionally, I can not send emails from any outlook (not EWS) or hotmail account.

Gary says that the problem is with my internet provider who has wrong DNS settings but I highly doubt as I have tried using several providers in more than one countries.

Moreover, other email clients that do not use AirSync work just fine.

I’ve told Gary that I think their AirSync implementation is not working properly but he doesn’t seem to get the message.

Moreover, I think MS does not use AirSync anymore.

That’s very disappointing

Update: I disabled AirSync and em can send emails.

Of course, I’ve now lost access to the calendar

It won’t work. Microsoft has apparently disallowed third party email clients from syncing with its calendar. I had an email from Microsoft recently explaining that. Of course some clients still work, including Thunderbird and Essential PIM. Both of those are clunkier than EMClient, but they work at least for now. Why those work and Em Client don’t is a mystery to me but don’t let anyone tell you that the problem is your settings. The problem is that EMClient won’t sync properly with an outlook.com calendar.

There has been no announcement from Microsoft to that effect and eM Client of course still syncs with the Microsoft account calendars.

Go to Menu > Accounts and add your account using the automatic setup.

Once it is done, check that the AirSync service is enabled, because that is required both to send messages, and to sync the calendar and contacts.

Yeah. For this account, the only thing I care about is calendar and contacts, which means it is a deal breaker. I have got the same impression from my hours of research that the message just isn’t getting in. It clearly is an issue and it isn’t being addressed.

This is my last comment on this. No it does not work. It might work for some, but not for all. I have tried every conceivable way of setting this up, using multiple default browsers for the connection to MS during setup. It does not work End of story. Just saying it does will not change the facts.

I know it’s the emClient the problem.

I am piloting One Calendar and it syncs just fine.

Of course, I wanted an integrated solution with emails, calendar, contacts, etc. in one piece. That’s why I went to em.

But given I couldn’t even send an email, I am very disappointed and frustrated as there aren’t many good solutions out there.

Thunderbird, Betterbird and all the birds do not work with calendar or my work Exchange email and Essential is, as you say, clunky with an outdated UI.

@Gary I’ve tried million times. It doesn’t work.

Are you saying that you are using a personal outlook or hotmail account and the calendar syncs?

Please see my comments above. You need to enable the AirSync service.

Yes. You need to enable the AirSync service to sync your calendar and to send messages.

@Gary We discussed this extensively in a support ticket.

To be clear, disabling AirSync allows me to send emails but, of course, there is no support for calendar/notes/etc.

You really need to check the way eM uses AirSync. It doesn’t work. It is an issue that many of us now have identified.

No, that is not possible.

Since March 2023, we have been using AirSync to bypass MS server issues for sending messages. See: Workaround for the sending issue via SMTP for Microsoft Outlook.com accounts | eM Client

If you disable AirSync in version 9, you will not be able to send messages with that account.

No, that is not possible
Yes, you are right; I got confused because if AirSync is disabled, then the account does not appear in the “From” account.

eM seems to have problems with AirSync since 2017. See this thread that discusses the same issues.

I too have tried this a zillion times. I have deleted and readded my account. I have unchecked and rechecked AirSync. I have fought this for over a year. The problem is that EmClient no longer communicates with the Microsoft system. You say that Microsoft has not made an announcement to this effect but in fact they have. I received this in an email from them a few days ago:

> The safety and security of your information is top priority for Microsoft. To help keep your account secure, Microsoft will no longer support the use of third-party email and calendar apps which ask you to sign in with only your Microsoft Account username and password. To keep you safe you will need to use a mail or calendar app which supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods. If you do not act, your third-party email apps will no longer be able to access your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com email address on September 16th.

> If you are receiving this email, you are currently using an email or calendar app that uses a less secure authentication method to connect to your Outlook.com email account. You will need to upgrade your third-party mail and calendar app to a version which supports modern authentication methods.
> ```
So. I need to upgrade my third-party mail and calendar app to a version which supports modern authentication methods. Apparently that is not EmClient.

It doesn’t say that Microsoft has disallowed third party email clients from syncing with its calendar.

Rather it says they won’t allow that using a username and password for access.

When Microsoft initially made this announcement 2 years ago, we provided instructions for what you need to do in the event your account was not already setup with oAuth (passwordless) in eM Client. You can find those instructions here: Microsoft disables Basic authentication for all accounts | eM Client

I have followed those instructions, including changes to the registry. In fact I have done it several times. The problem has not been solved.

As promised, I am not going to comment on this any more, but FWIW, I have decided to experiment with using Google for calendar and contacts. I don’t think MS are going to get any more open, quite the contrary, so I will run this in parallel with Outlook using Betterbird. It seems to be able to do most things I can do with Outlook and seems to have much better informed support than here. It seems a big step, but it probably isn’t really, especially using IMAP.
