I am using the free version of the 8.2 of em Client. Is all I need to do is to run the free version 9 MSI or do I need to uninstall version 8 and back up my email before doing the update? Will it retain my license for version 8?

You can just run the version 9 msi, and it will update version 8, keeping your license, settings and data in place.
