I am trying to restore my email after reinstalling Windows. I did a backup on an external file before I reinstalled Windows. If I now try the Restore function, it says that it cannot find any backup files. I tried to copy the zipped backup file to several different locations on the hard drive and adjust the location in the Settings, Backup window, but it keeps showing me the same message. The message flashes very briefly before returning the client to the normal interface.
I desperately need to restore the emails in that backup file. Please assist!
Hi Madelie, the restore feature looks for the backup file only in the folder predefined in Tools > Settings > General > Backup.
Make sure you’ve added the backup file into this folder and try to restore from the backup again.
Thank you,
Paul
Hi Paul,
Thanks for your quick response. I have the backup file on an external hard drive. Where can I copy this file to on my C drive so that EM Client will pick it up?
I already have reinstalled windows, and the current backup settings is to my external as well, so I don’t know which path to use for the backup folder destination.
Thank you,
As I previously noted you have to put the backup file into the folder based on your setup in Tools > Settings > General > Backup.
Hope this helps,
Paul
Hi Paul,
I have the same problem, I have put the backup file (it’s a compressed folder including several .dat files) into the correct position but the system does not see it as a backup file
Hi Guido, did you move this backup file into the backup folder based on the settings in Tools > Settings > General > Backup, on the computer where you want to restore the file?
Did you move the backup file from another computer, possibly running a different operating system? What version of eM Client are you currently using on your computer, can you please check for the exact version number in Help > About?
Thank you,
Paul
Question 1: Yes, even if the path is slightly different as I’m using an Italian language version.
Question 2: Yes, from a Windows XP to a Windows 7 pro.
Question 3: the old pc has the version 6.0.21034.0 while the new one the 6.021372.0
Anyway (but the problem now is to let the software find the backup files), the restore function will reproduce my original subdirectories frame or should I recreate exactly it before restoring?
Thanks
Hi again, can you please try to restore your data manually, extract the database folder from the archive and replace the current database folder on your new computer in your local folder > App Data > Roaming > eM Client.
Thank you,
Paul
Hi again, glad it works, please make sure to let us know if you come across any future issues with the application, we’ll be happy to help.
Thank you,
Paul
