Strange Error when trying to retrieve email

Getting this cryptic message on my wife’s system when trying to retrieve her email:

[POP3] Can’t retrieve POP3 message due to the following reason:
“-ERR Message 17 expunged.”

I’ve checked all the account settings and the diagnose function show both POP and SMTP to be ok. Not an issue on my system using the same ISP. Emclient is up to date, as is Windows. Using Live Mail, still installed but not used, retrieved her email OK. Any thoughts, or suggestions?

Very similar problem began today. Same message except 618. Do you have Comcast email? They say it’s a TSL problem…

Yes, we have Comcast. What makes it so strange as I don’t have the problem on Win 11, just my wife’s on Win 10. Thanks for the heads-up about it being a TSL problem. Have to wait and see I guess.

This is a server error.

It means that a message the server said was available to download, 618 or 17 or whichever, has in fact been expunged (permanently deleted) from the server, so it can’t be downloaded.

How does one determine which email is the problem? And BTW, NONE of my emails are downloading, not just a couple. What is the fix?

That is mentioned in the error. So message 618 on the server, in your case. It is not something you can find or fix, as it is a server error. Your email provider will need to fix that and once they have the rest of the messages should continue to download.

This could be related to your issue:

Comcast announced last week that the outdated version 1.1 of its Transport Layer Security (TLS) will no longer be supported.
For security reasons, its email system will now support TLS version 1.2. Therefore, it had discontinued the ability to connect through TLS 1.1 and lower on April 17, 2023.

This means that older applications/devices will no longer be able to connect to Comcast’s email system. Comcast recommends to its users to update their device (OS) and their email software in order to be able to access their Comcast.net email.

This is also what Comcast told me. However, it is my understanding that EmClient does support TLS version 1.2. Is that correct Gary?

It does support TLS1.2, what are the POP/SMTP account settings you have configured (black out personal info)

POP 3
Host: mail.comcast.net
Port: 995
Use SSL/TLS on special port (legacy)
SMTP.comcast.net
Port:587
Force usage SSL/TLS

I tried changing to imap 993 with same result
Also tried changing pop3 to force usage ssl/tls with same result

These are the same for me and my wife. I’m fine, but a no-go for the wife. Only difference is I’m on Win 11 and she’s on Win 10. Both our systems are fully updated as is Emclient. Maybe try Force usage SSL/TLS on the POP 3 side? I’ll have to try that on the other PC. Oops just saw you tried that.

Both of your computers using the same version of eMC?

Mine is 9.2.1735, the latest version. I am also Windows 10

Ours are both 9.2.1735.

This has also happened to me starting today. I get the Message Expunged Error and no email is received. I checked my Comcast/Xfinity Inbox online and there is new mail. Is there someone I can call at Comcast about the problem? I obviously can’t report the problem with email.

[POP3] Can’t retrieve POP3 message due to the following reason:
“-ERR Message 17 expunged.”

Check online in your mailbox that you can open & view all your POP3 emails ok in your inbox as could be there is an old email that didn’t delete properly or is partially corrupted and causing the expunged error.

Did you try to ask for help in the Xfinity Community forum?

Cyberzonk’s suggestion was the fix. I went to my Inbox at comcast and started deleting emails in my inbox keeping only the ones that had not downloaded. Finally a blank email from “unknown sender” appeared (I’m not sure if it was invisible before or if I had just missed it). I believe when I deleted that one, I was then able to download my email.

No problem opening the mails in the Xfinity Online mail. I discovered that I had 999+ emails in the inbox. It looks like EMClient has not been able to delete messages or mark them as read for about 3 years.
