I am experiencing a recurring issue with the EM Client spell checker that seems to affect only the Dutch language setting. This problem began occurring today and has also been noticed by a colleague for some time. It appears that this issue is specific to instances when we type in Dutch and use the Dutch spell checker; the English settings do not exhibit this problem.
The main issue is that the spell checker incorrectly marks the initial word of a sentence as incorrect if it starts with a capital letter. For instance, it highlights the first word in a sentence as an error, which can be seen in the attached screenshot.
Interestingly, I found a temporary workaround: if I select all the text, switch the spell checker to English, and then switch it back to Dutch, the issue resolves until the next occurrence.
Could you provide any insights into what might be causing this issue?
I am using Windows 11, and my EM Client is fully updated.
This was occurring with Swedish too. I first noticed it sometime during Q1 2025, but I’m unsure about exactly when the issue began for me.
I’ve held off on reporting or troubleshooting the issue until now, and I’ve fixed the issue for me, but I can’t guarantee it will work for others.
To see if the issue was present in other languages, I wrote a short email in Swedish and used a web page to translate the text to other languages. I pasted the translated text in the email and changed the spell check language to the one being used for the text. I did this for French, Spanish, German and Dutch, and for me the issue was not present in any of those languages.
After testing the Dutch spell checker, I translated the message from Dutch to Swedish, and switched the spell checker to Swedish once more, and now the issue was gone…
I’ve created a few new emails and restarted eM Client to make sure that the issue really was fixed, and for me it seems as if it is fixed. Hopefully this will work for anybody else who run into this issue.
