I use IMAP in my email program.
for a local spam filtering program that uses lists and heuristics, has been around a long time and does a pretty good job, I use Mailwasher Pro. Even have a lifetime license.

We started using Mailwasher Pro in 2005 it works best with POP mail, however, it will also
work with IMAP though is not ideal, follow this link.

For IMAP, Mailwasher Server is the choice though for this the installation needs to be server-side
and for the individual is not ideal or always possible.
Using Mailwasher we receive virtually no SPAM and this has been the case for years

@skybat might be right about not working well locally (client not server) with IMAP. I am using IMAP, but archive after 9 days, so it isn’t dealing with a horrible amount of emails. I would respect @skybat’s report that it would be difficult to use effectively with IMAP without archiving frequently.
I have installed the mailwasher spamprogram and it seems to work pretty well but I have now started to recive spam in my unread email box. Do anybody know how I can fix this?

The best way to deal with spam in your Inbox, is to login to your email provider’s webmail interface, select the message in the Inbox and mark it as spam. The server will normally learn from this, and hopefully your spam issue will be reduced as the spam detection ability of the server improves.
