Is there a way to create a smart-folder option to show “unread messages from contacts”. Or some kind of work-around? This was used in the old Windows Live Mail and I found it quite useful

No, not really.
But you can specify which contacts, or select them all when you create the Search Folder. Unfortunately that is not updated when you edit, remove or add a new contact to your Contacts, so you will have to manually edit the Smart Folder equation each time. Also, the Search Folder will not show an unread count like the other Smart Folders, but then all the messages in that folder will be unread, so there may not be a need to display that.
