Setting Up Gmail POP3

Trying to setup a Gmail account using POP3.
Doesn’t seem to work. Incoming says server didn’t accept my credentials.
SMTP 'Server not responding.

I had no issues when I created the same account in Thunderbird.
What is different about eM Client??

James

Unfortunately you can no longer use POP3 with Gmail. Please see our announcement here from March 2022.

Why is Thunderbird using POP3 with Gmail?? No issues.

Alas, eM Client will not connect to Gmail - using either POP3 or IMAP. Today is Jan 14, 2025: Outlook connected to Gmail - USING POP3 - Just Fine.

To be fair, Thunderbird has also lost all connection to Gmail. It at least has the benefit of being available without cost (short of “voluntary” donations, of course).

If eM Client has just suddenly stopped receiving mail (as well as Thunderbird) and will not connect to Gmail “using an IMAP setup which is now required for eM Client & Gmail”, then that could be related to an eg: external program possibly interfering with the mail clients.

So if you have any optionally installed Firewall / Security programs or optionally installed antivirus programs or VPN “other than what comes default with the OS”, then try completely disabling those to test incase of any interference.

If you have nothing like that optionally installed or disabling any optionally installed programs make no difference, then update what your Gmail IMAP server address, port and security policy is ?

Also are you getting an error message ?

Also what version of eM Client do you have ?

If you don’t see an error messages, click the dropdown on the right of Refresh and click Show Operations. Then click the Log tab and look for any obvious error messages and paste them in this thread. Blank out anything personal

Also have you tried removing and readding your Gmail account using the automatic account wizard via “Menu / Accounts” ?

If you haven’t already tried removing and readding your Gmail account, make a manual backup first via “Menu / Backup” incase you need to restore for any reason. You can see when the backup is complete in Show Operations via the drop-down on the right of Refresh.

.

Using Ver 10.1.4588 (f11e2ab).
Have tried defeating both VPN and Norton (AV & Firewall); have tried an alternative system; have tried changing the Default Browser.
Do not get a specific error msg in eM Client - simply a Red Triangle with an Exclamation Point in the middle.
What is particularly maddening is the Gmail CLAIMS that eM Client has been granted access.

T’Bird (and Gmail, of course) had been set up for POP3 (for years…), and most recently with OAuth Authentication. Apparently that is now a Problem, so it seemed a good time to try to switch over to IMAP as “everyone” says that that is better.
However, the only connection I’ve been able to make is via the “NEW” Outlook app, connecting to Gmail using POP3. For the time being I am giving up on IMAP (which means giving up on eM Client…) and will try to make Some Client connect using POP3.
If ONLY “New” Outlook can make that connection, I may end up re-trying IMAP with eM Client, at which point I will take a look at the “Log” tab you reference & see what it contains.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

eM Client does not currently support OAuth Gmail connections with POP accounts as per Google changes sometime ago as @Gary advised further up this thread, so you need to use eM Client with IMAP with the automatic account wizard if you want to use eM Client.

Note: If there is enough users who still want POP with Gmail, eM Client may possibly down the track program POP setup with an OAuth app token. But I doubt there is current enough users globally to warrant that anymore due to the limitations with POP accounts. However if you do want that, you can make a suggestion on the Sleekplan voting and ideas page.

So if you have previously setup eM Client with a legacy Gmail POP account and have emails under that, then once your Gmail IMAP account is working, drag / move your existing POP mail and any custom POP mail folders over to your new Gmail IMAP account. Then once you are confident all the email has been moved over, then remove the old Gmail POP account.

Note: I recommend after you move the email across to click the dropdown on the right of Refresh and click Show Operations which will then show the POP account mail uploading to your IMAP account. You can then visually see when it’s all completeted.

What is particularly maddening is the Gmail CLAIMS that eM Client has been granted access.

If you have successfully connected to Gmail using the automatic account wizard, at the end of the wizard you get a browser prompt to give eM Client access to your Google email, calendar etc. Then in your Google Account / Security section you will see an eM Client OAuth token as in the below example. I have 2 tokens as I also have given eM Client access to Google drive for Cloud attachment sending for very large files.

So if the OAuth token is showing ok in your Google account then that usually that means it’s a local computer issue with something running resident blocking or interferring with eM Client.

So I would next try eg: “disabling all background tasks on startup” other than the basic OS stuff & then reboot your computer and try the automatic account wizard again. You can then see if it’s something starting up causing the problem.

I may end up re-trying IMAP with eM Client, at which point I will take a look at the “Log” tab you reference & see what it contains.

If you do try eM Client again and it still won’t connect via the wizard, just look for any obvious error messages in the Log & update this thread.
