Server says: Logon failure unknown user name or bad P/W

Been using em client for a long time. All of the sudden, 2 days ago this message pops up on some (not all) accounts and I am unable to retrieve emails. I can send emails but not receive. Nothing has changed at my end for a long time. It works in outlook which I have been using short term after this started. ideas?

Normally that means incorrect credentials.

Check you have the correct username (your full email address) and password. Some email providers don’t use the account password, so check if yours maybe requires an app password (sometimes called a secure key) which you can generate on their website.

Some providers also no longer use username/password logins. I see your previous post about a year back was about an Exchange account. Office 365 and other hosted Exchange servers no longer accept username/password logins. See here.

I went into em client - tools - accounts - to one of the accounts not working - and hit diagnostics. SMTP came back OK. POP3 came back with “your credentials were rejected”. I have not changed my credentials at all so something else is forcing the issue. I hit “fix” and that didn’t work either. Again everything works fine in outlook but I like em client way more. Can anyone steer me as to where to look for whatever this is?

As your POP account comes back with credentials rejected, as @Gary advised prev that could mean your mailbox providor no longer supports username and password logins and might now be using an OAuth token. So first check with your providor if they still support POP and username and password login.

If they no longer support POP, then you will have to add your same account via the automatic email wizard and then drag all your current POP account mail and folders to your new account. Then once you are certain it’s all moved over to your new account, you then remove the old POP account. Check online via webmail to confirm it’s there.

However if your mailbox provider still supports POP, then suggest to create a folder under Local Folders at the bottom left called eg: Old Mail, and then drag all your current POP mail exactly as it is under that. Then re-add your POP account via the “Add / Mail / Other” option in eM Client accounts. Once you then have resetup your POP account and it’s working, drag all your old POP mail from under Old Mail back up to your new POP account.

Note: If you readd your POP account, at the end of the wizard you will have the option to either put your email in “Separate Folder Tree” or “Store messages in local folders” at the bottom left.

Lastly backup eM Client before doing anything incase anything goes wrong via “Menu / Backup” (PC) or “File / Backup” (Mac). You can see when the backup is completed in “Show Operations” via the dropdown on the right of Refresh.

Thanks for the excellent advice!

Update - so I got email working in my phone by creating a new account, selecting exchange etc - so that works now. This also confirms passwords etc so all is good there.

Only having the problem with EM client now. I tried entering info in automatic setup and in the exchange section but couldn’t get it to connect either way. Is this a version problem??? I am using EM version 7.2.50008.0
