Security Problem

Big security problem is that the password for the email account is unencrypted in file “accounts.dat”. Is this a joke? In older versions is the same problem, but in the file “main.dat”.

Hello Olgoj,
we’re terribly sorry, but this is unfortunately not something we can change at the moment.
For bigger security we suggest encrypting your windows profile completely.

Olivia

any news on that issue?

This is a serious security issue which I also noticed recently. It has not been taken seriously. The passwords of all users email accounts are easily accessible in plain text form.
It reflects very badly on the company.

I thought version 7.1 corrected this?

It was only after ‘upgrading’ from 6 to 7 that I became aware of this probem while trying to sort out the various other problems caused by ‘upgrading’.
I was hoping that my comment would have brought a much bigger response from users. It seems that most are as complacent about security as are eM Client Inc.

It was a big deal after 7.0 was released and it is my recollection that eM Client was to encrypt in version 7.1.  In any event, I would upgrade to 7.1.  The 7.0 license is valid for 7.1.

Many thanks for your reply.

I can’t find any reference to this in the release notes. ‘Upgrading’ (the apostrophes are there because it felt more like a downgrade to me) from 6 to 7 shortened my life by several days so unless I can confirm that 7.1 definitely addresses the problem I’d prefer to avoid an upgrade. I was hoping that a company representative would have contributed by now.
I might do a fresh install on another computer to check it out when I get a chance.

Unlike the 6 to 7 upgrade, 7.0 to 7.1 is more like an update.  There is no porting of the database or upgrade difficulties that came with 6.0 to 7.0.  For me it was completely painless.

As a follow-up, please see the following string from about 9 months ago.  Please note Olivia’s statement about version 7.1.

I did a fresh install of 7.1 on another computer and finding that was OK I updated my working version from 7.0 to 7.1, painlessly.
I now feel more secure and happy.
Many thanks for your help.
