Rules running on Junk E-mail Folder?

I’m running Hotmail where anything in my contact list automatically goes to the Junk-E-mail folder. I’d like to now run rules against the Junk E-mail folder to get rid of known spam while leaving everything else to automatically expire in a couple weeks. The problem is that the rules I’ve been creating don’t seem to work.

Do rules run on emails within the Junk E-mail folder? I know they don’t in Hotmail, which is why I’m trying em Client.

As far as I am aware you will need to do this manually:
Right click the Junk folder ->Apply Rule

Thanks for the response. When I right click on the Junk folder → Apply rule I see all the rules I’ve created (that don’t seem to be running).

You normally only run rules either automatically or manually on the Inbox before going to the spam folder.

If messages are already in the spam folder within eM CIient, then either your mail server has moved it via the server ai spam filtering engine or manual server filter, or your local rule you setup in your inbox within eM CIient didnt work for some reason & needs checking.

So if messages are now showing locally in eM CIient spam folder and you have a IMAP, Exchange, Office 365 or iCloud account, go online to your spam folder and mark those messages as not spam. That will then train your server mailbox to keep them in the inbox for future and will also automatically move them to your Inbox.

Thanks. That was what I was afraid of

I was hoping to do the opposite (send everything to junk but pull out important messages). Unfortunately, there is no rule saying “if not in my contact list then do something”, which is part of what is needed.

Reading this thread with interest, I’m looking for mail clients that run against the default Hotmail ‘Junk Email’ type folders. Hotmail does it’s own filtering and puts junk in there, but there seems no way of running rules against that folders contents after Hotmail has put them in there. Outlook rules only run against the Inbox, once in Junk Email there seems no way to mark as spam/run rules.

I get a lot of spam with exactly the same sender/subject/content that I can easily match with a rule and I just want to delete it without seeing it, but the fact it’s already in Junk Email and can’t be filtered automatically is maddening.
