Hello -
I bought a new laptop and am keeping my old one. I downloaded emClient from the Microsoft store and it had no way to add my license key. Followed advice in another thread and downloaded the latest version of the client but when I went to activate the license, it told me that my Pro license key wouldn’t work with version 10.
So I removed 10 and installed 9 but now I’m getting a message that my emClient won’t work with my database because it’s from a newer version. So I can’t launch the application. I also think that the database that it found was from circa 2024 based on the mail I saw, not the one associated with the MS Store version.
How do I solve this issue?
I tried to follow a job aid I found about downgrading by renaming my database so I could have it create a new one in the old version and I could restore my last backup, but I can’t find the database in the file path referenced in the article.

This is the default hidden database folders for PC or Mac unless you changed that when you originally setup eM Client.
(Hidden database folder Windows)
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\eM Client
(Hidden database folder Mac)
/Users/User Name/Library/Application Support/eM Client

I could restore my last backup,
If you did have a recent eM Client V9 backup on your 1st computer, and don’t have a V10 license, then “after renaming the hidden database folder on the 2nd computer”, copy the latest dated eM Client backup.zip file from your 1st computer “Document\eM Client” folder and paste it “in the same location on your 2nd computer”.
Then install “the same eM Client V9 on your second computer” from the release history page and “Skip / Cancel the setup wizard” and then restore your V9 backup via “Menu / File / Restore”. Then go to “Menu / Help / License” and activate.
Note: If you have a free personal use license key and activate it on a 2nd pc, it will normally automatically deactivate the license on the 1st pc “and vica versa” unless you have purchased / upgraded to either a new V10 personal 3 device license or previously purchased another V9 license separately or have a business multi device license.
You might also want to check out the eM Client blog below on transferring to another computer where you can still keep eM Client on the 1st computer.

Hi, circling back on this topic.
I had the v9 PRO license - I thought that meant I had multiple devices I could use it on?
I am so very close. Can you tell me what the name of the database file is I need to rename? Is it the largest .dat file?

By default unless you either initially or later bought extra device licenses eM Client Pro V9 only normally had 1 device install with the purchase.
V10 introduced a new option called the Personal. Version which includes 3 devices.l as per the pricing page.

You rename the “eM Client folder itself” below to eg: eM Client-old and “don’t rename a file inside it” or you could risk corrupting the entire database.
Make sure eM Client “is closed when you rename it”. Then reopen it which will create a new eM Client folder and new database within it to either “setup new” or “skip the setup wizard” and restore an eM Client V9 backup.
