Receiving incoming email notifications from this forum

I am receiving most incoming emails now with EM Client, but for some strange reason the email notifications I receive from this forum, will not show up in my EM Client inbox. Yet, they do show up in Outlook or my SHAW webmail. Never had this happen with any email client before. Any ideas why this would happen?

Thanks
Tim

So I discovered that they are not showing up in the inbox because they are being sent straight to the trash folder. Why does this happen and how? I didn’t tell EM Client to do this.

Sounds like you might have some sort of eg: rule or blacklist setup” to automatically move incoming mail to the Trash folder.

Go to “Menu / Rules” and “dbl-click all the rules” to look inside them.

If you carn’t see anything obvious, try “deselecting all the rules” and see if it then receives ok in the Inbox.

Also if you have V10, the blacklist rules are via “Menu / Settings (Preferences) / Mail / Blacklist.

Lastly if no rules setup in eM Client, then “check in your mailbox online” in case you have a rule or filter setup online that then might be affecting eM Client.

Thanks for the reply. I looked in the rules section and the only thing there is something called “Spam Filter”. I did not create that and have no idea how it got there. When I double click on it, it says: “Cannot edit a rule that has been composed in the wizard” Makes no sense at all to me and seems pretty weird.

Also, even though the notification emails are going straight into the trash, I can only find them in Outlook. In EM Client, there is a “1” beside the inbox, but nothing there to view, and nothing in the trash folder.

I don’t know what you mean by “check in your mailbox online”?

The Spam filter is a default filter and won’t affect that.

Open a web browser and login to your mailbox online and then check if you have any rules or filters setup there.

No rules or filters at my Shaw Webmail online account. Besides, I have never set up any rules or filters at anytime on any email client.

It is interesting that the notification emails from this forum are in the inbox in my Shaw Webmail and in Outlook, but not viewable in EM Client. This seems odd to me, because they are coming from the EM Client forum? In EM Client when I hold the cursor over the Inbox folder it now says “Inbox - 1 items (0 unread)”, but I cannot see or view them in the inbox. So in order to see an EM Client forum notification, I have to go to Outlook to see and read it.

Should I delete that “Spam Filter” item in my rules, even though I have no idea what it is or how it got there. Note that I just moved over to EM Client from Postbox about a week ago. Postbox has been completely removed from my PC.

Thats a mystery then why your eM Client forum notification emails go to your trash folder.

Hopefully other forum members can help you.

You can certainly try unchecking the default spam filter in rules, but that normally shouldn’t cause eM Client forum notifications to go directly to Trash. Thats only for POP account filtering.

Yes, it certainly is a strange mystery. It may be that they originally only went to trash because I viewed them in Outlook, and may have moved them the trash in Outlook? Because, I checked this morning and the notification for your latest response was shown as a +1 with the cursor over the EM Client inbox, but it will not let me see or read it. I have to go to Outlook to see and read it. Then whatever I do with it in Outlook then changes in EM Client; i.e. if I read it, it then shows as read in EM Client, but I still cannot see or read it there. If I move it to the trash in Outlook, then it shows up in the trash in EM Client and I can see and read it in the trash folder. AFAIK, this only happens with notification emails from this forum. If it was happening with other received emails, I would have to drop EM Client and move on. Surely there must be an obvious reason for this to happen?

A couple of thoughts:

Do you have Categories on in eM Client? If so, are those emails in one of the categories rather than Inbox? If it’s not there then maybe there is a problem in the Categories logic.
Try turning Categories off and see what happens:
Settings > Mail > Categories then untick Show categories
Then click Apply or Save & Close.

Is your email account secure? Is it possible that someone else has access to it, or it has been hacked? If so, maybe change your email account credentials.

If using WiFi to connect, is your WiFi secure?

What operating system are you using? If Windows, what 3rd party security software are you using? I can’t see how, but if the security app is monitoring emails there might be an issue - if so turn that component off and see what happens.

Thanks John . . . . . that was it. Even though I have no idea what “Categories” is all about, and I definitely did not turn it on myself. It must have been turned on by default when I installed EM Client. Anyway, as soon as I turned categories off, the email showed up in my inbox and I can read it now.

Question: why would having categories turned on, only affect notification emails from the EM Client forums and not affect any other emails I receive? That seems pretty odd to me.

Thanks again
Tim

Categories enabled normally wouldn’t send an email directly to the Trash folder. That’s only automatically detecting the type of email and showing them in different Category Inbox tabs.

See extract below from the eM Client V10 Blog.

Customizable email classification into Inbox Categories

eM Client now supports category tabs in your Inbox, so you can have the most important messages at the ready while the newsletters, social site updates, and other emails are categorized into separate sections for your convenience.

There are several options: use just two categories (Primary and Other), Google style model (Primary, Promotions, Social, …), add or remove other options (All, Updates, Forums, Other, …), and mix and match based on your preference.

For Gmail accounts, categories are synchronized from the server while eM Client uses its own algorithm to sort messages for other accounts.

If the default categorization does not fit your preference, drag the message into a different category tab or change the category via right-click on the message > Category and assigning the right one for you! You can also merge different categories together, if you perhaps want to see your Social updates in your Primary inbox.

eM Client 10: Change category

Together with this option come Custom rules for category organization – when moving a message, it is possible to set any new messages from the same sender to go into the same category and you can also move all older messages into this category.

Custom rules and all category settings can be modified or removed in Menu > Settings > Mail > Categories section.

Yes, you must have chosen to activate Categories during installation.

As to why the Categories logic caused the issue, maybe the eM Client forum messages go into a category that is different to other emails, but that doesn’t explain why they wind up in Trash.

With Categories ON, after you receive a forum message, can you have a look in all the Categories and see if it is present? If it really goes straight to Trash, and you are sure that you haven’t moved them to Trash yourself (ie in Outlook or your online account), maybe there’s an issue in the eM Client Category logic?

It might help if you posted screen images (with personal details erased) of what happens to a forum message with Categories ON and OFF (ie only using eM Client, don’t use Outlook or your online account while doing this).

I just noticed this: [quote=“zuropak, post:6, topic:102386”]

Another possibility is that something weird happened in the migration of your Postbox account to eM Client. Others may comment on what to do here because further information may be required to determine what went wrong. The fix maybe to remove your account from eM Client, restart it, then add your account again.

Sorry, but I think I confused you guys with my posts. I originally thought they were automatically going to trash, but they weren’t. What had happened was, because I couldn’t see and read the emails in EM Client, I was going to Outlook and reading them there. Once I read them I moved them to trash. So when I went back to EM Client they were now in the trash folder there and available to read. So I mistakenly thought they were automatically going there. So the only problem was that I could not see or read them in the EM Client Inbox, but could in every other email app.

As I mentioned, I have no idea what “categories” is, and I have no need for it at all. There is no way that I would activate it during installation not knowing what it is, and I am positive I did not knowingly activate it. Installation processes for most programs is pretty straight forward and I would not activate something that I had no idea what is was.

Regardless, since I turned off categories, it all seems to be working properly now. Note, that I always was able to see and read every email in my inbox, EXCEPT FOR the notifications from this forum. So the categories being turned on was somehow isolating only these notification emails and NOTHING else. I did not create this myself.

Ah ok that explains it is then.

There is no way that I would activate it during installation not knowing what it is, and I am positive I did not knowingly activate it.

When you install V10 it comes up on one of the initial screens as the top option is “Custom Recommended” where you choose the options.

The second option on the initial setup are “with Categories”, with “AI” and with “Recent badges”.

The last option is with “No Categories”, “No AI” and “No Recent badges”.

So I suspect you might have then eg: inadvertently enabled Categories maybe on the “Custom Recommended setup” & “didn’t deselect it on the next few screens” of the installation.

Note: If you ever do want to use Categories again, go to your Inbox and “look to the right of your Primary Inbox” and you will then see the eM Client forum updates in another Inbox Tab. You can then either “right click on the subject” and change the category to the Primary Inbox, or you can also drag it from the Other Inbox tab to the Primary Inbox. eM Client will then ensure via a prompt, that those emails for future will go into the Primary Inbox.

Thats fine Tim, good that you sorted that problem out.

As to why you didn’t see the Categories option during install - I know nothing about Postbox > eM Client migration, but maybe in that process you don’t see the Categories option normally seen in a fresh install, or maybe some trigger in your Postbox account automatically set Categories ON. Others may confirm this.
