Problem upgrading from eM Client v8 to v9

I have Windows 7 Home Edition. I was using Windows Live 2012 email until support stopped last year. I then downloaded eM Client version 8 and it worked/migrated perfectly with Gmail. Two weeks ago, I tried to upgrade to eM Client version 9 and, though it downloaded without a problem, I could not get the program to open. The error message had to do with “ incorrect permissions”. So I deleted the download and returned to version 8 and it worked perfectly. Never had a “permissions” issue with version 8. Is there a fix to this problem? Thanks.

eM Client V9 was not designed to run on Windows 7, and you cannot guarantee that everything will work properly at all even if you get it installed. I would stick to eM Client V8 which works fine as you say.

Windows 7 is also no longer supported since January 14, 2020 by Microsoft and is no longer secure to run, where you should be running min Windows 10 by now. Suggest to update to Windows 10 before reinstalling eM Client V9 again. Most developers also no longer support Windows 7 or 8.

Thank you for your input. I will stick with version 8 for now. Suggest eM Client include a note to users regarding the Windows minimum compatible operating system required when upgrading from v8 to v9.

I’m running EMC v 9 on Windows 7 (32 bit) without a problem.

I suspect the 'permissions error which the OP mentioned might be because v9 was installed without Admin rights; in which case simply ‘right click’ on the EMC v9.install exe file, then select ‘Run As Administrator’. Then restart the PC once EMC is installed.

Actually the last (and possibly final) Microsoft update for Windows 7 was issued only recently - on January 10, 2023. In addition, MS still provide regular anti virus updates for W7, as do most other AV providers. So providing W7 users are sensible, and avoid risky websites and pirated software installs etc, there’s no reason in my experience why W7 cant be run safely until that user migrates to a newer OS.

As an IT tech, I see plenty of Windows 10 and 11 PCs that are infected with viruses and spyware. Conversely I see plenty Windows 7 PCs (and even XP PCs) run ‘virus free’ for years on end.
So a newer OS doesn’t necessarily mean ‘safety’, especially if it isnt used sensibly or knowledgeably).

Windows 7 is estimated to still be running on around 70 million PCs worldwide (many of those within the businesses and industry sector), which is why I suspect EMC still runs on Windows 7.

Thank you HPlaptopuser. I have Windows 7 64-bit, so it should work even better. I will try your solution. I use an excellent anti-virus program, Avast, which has done an excellent job of protecting my W7 system. I believe in “keep it simple stupid” and “if it’s not broken, don’t break it”, so I will continue to use W7 for the foreseeable future.

Hi Mark

I’d personally just use Windows 7 built-in Windows Defender (it actually has quite good detection rates).

I’d first of all uninstall Avast (for the reasons Skybat mentioned…and more) then restart W7 and ensure Defender is enabled.

Tip: You can manually download Defender virus updates if need be (then restart your PC to make them active)… https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/defenderupdates

I think you’ll find your PC will run quicker this way …and with less Avast intrusions.

Edit. Because its Avast, I suggest using IObit uninstaller to remove it, so there are no leftovers on your system… Download IObit Uninstaller Portable - MajorGeeks

PS:

Mark.

On second thoughts I’d remove Avast and restart the PC before trying to install EMC v.9, …as Avast might be part of the ‘permissions’ issue problem.

Actually the last (and possibly final) Microsoft update for Windows 7 was issued only recently - on January 10, 2023

Microsoft did end support for Windows 7 in 2020. See the Microsoft link below.

As an IT support tech (I do not recommend) anyone still using Windows 7. If you or anyone else wants to run that good luck to you.

Windows 7 support ended on January 14, 2020 - Microsoft Support.

So providing W7 users are sensible, and avoid risky websites and pirated software installs etc, there’s no reason in my experience why W7 cant be run safely until that user migrates to a newer OS.

That is not safe and not sensible just running an Antivirus program on an old OS that has security issues in the OS itself. You might be getting virus updates, but your not getting OS security patches / updates to patch the holes in the OS where hackers can get through. So that’s flawed thinking that it’s ok to recommend to still run an unsupported OS.

Windows 7 is estimated to still be running on around 70 million PCs worldwide (many of those within the businesses and industry sector), which is why I suspect EMC still runs on Windows 7.

That maybe but it’s not safe to be running it any longer. Also there is now compatibility issues with many programs due to not enough support in the OS anymore, and you need to update to get that now with many different new programs.

Microsoft gave all Win 7 free upgrades to Win 10 years ago when they announced it was ending support and that’s what users should have done by now. If you want to still support customers running Windows 7 good luck to you.

As an IT tech, I see plenty of Windows 10 and 11 PCs that are infected with viruses and spyware

As an IT tech myself that only happens due to users click on things in emails or browser links they shouldn’t, which then installs viruses, spyware, malware or ransomware etc. I and many friends and associates have been running Win 10 and Win 11 since upgrading from Win 7 and never had any viruses, spyware, malware or ransomware. Also don’t use any other security or antivirus program other than the built-in in Windows security. So recommend to upgrade the Win 7 OS to min Win 10 as previously stated.

I gave up Windows completely, that was the best decision.
Linux is the way to go, hopefully with emClient some day.

Forget what Microsoft ‘say’ …much of it is sales talk designed to get users to buy Windows 10 etc. The reality of the situation is this…

Quote…

“It is true that since January 2020 Windows 7 did not receive ‘support’ from Microsoft. This means that the computers that used that operating system continued to work, although they did not have new security updates or technical support. However, Windows 7 still benefited from “vulnerability patches” through its ESU maintenance program, especially intended for businesses and professionals who maintained that version”.
Source: Microsoft ends support for Windows 7 in 2023

Many of these these “vulnerability patches” were also made available to non-paying users of Windows 7, and the last patch was issued by Microsoft on January 10, 2023.

Take it easy. Relax. I specifically said in my first comment…

“So providing W7 users are sensible, and avoid risky websites and pirated software installs etc, there’s no reason in my experience why W7 can’t be run safely until that user migrates to a newer OS”…

That says it all

(I’m a Linux Mint user myself, but I still need Windows to use Office (Excel with Macros), Photoshop, and a ton of other stuff not available on Linux and no viable Linux-based substitutes…

OK, two things here, I specifically agree with @cyberzork on this concerning Win 7, though of course, each to their own.
AND
I ran a computer support company for 30 years until last year when I sold out a controlling share (there were 300+ colleagues at the time in 41 locations throughout Europe, North Africa & Middle East)
I believe that you would be hard pushed to find more than a handful of users to meet the following condition “So providing W7 users are sensible, and avoid risky websites and pirated software installs etc”
Just my opinion based on my experiences.

Also it is still possible to download legally from MS an upgrade to Win10 matching like with like (32/64bit - Home & Pro)

I bought an Imac for the commercial stuff, its now a good mix completely without Windows.

So in your opinion, only a “handful” of Windows 7 users - out of many millions worldwide - are ‘sensible’ enough to avoid visiting risky websites (porn and gambling websites etc) and avoid pirated software installs.
I don’t know what circles you move in, but perhaps get out more and look around.

Absolutely, you have no idea of the circles in which I am able move!
I guarantee that I do get out and look around plus I am certain I able to do more than most.
