Postbox Continually Crashes

eM Client seems to crash at random for me right now, even while I’m not actively doing anything in the program.

I am a former Postbox user — when I saw that Postbox had been acquired and that support for that old program was ending, I decided to go ahead and take the plunge with eM Client. I love some of the features, and I think it could be an excellent mail client for me. But right now, it seems to crash once every couple of minutes while it’s sitting open.

At first it seemed to crash whenever I tried to print/export an email. Restarting my Windows 11 laptop seemed to fix the problem. Now, it closes at random.

The only things I can think of that may be causing the issue is that I did import things from Postbox. To my surprise, it seems to have imported all my trash, as well, stuff I thought I’d long-since deleted. The trash is under my Gmail account. Currently, there are 9,423 messages in that folder. I am slowly going through and confirming that I wanted to delete them.

Multiple emails don’t have a TO address when viewed in the folder (often just saying “me,” which is a FROM field, I think.), and they don’t have a subject, either.

Alternatively, my Gmail account says it has about 52.25 GB of 102 GB used. Perhaps that’s causing an issue? I don’t believe I have it set to download everything.

Every time it crashes, it runs the database checker and doesn’t seem to find anything wrong.

Anyone have any ideas?

Update: It is now crashing when I click “Refresh.”

I have tried working it account by account, and it seems that sending and receiving for each of the regular accounts I have causes no issue. However, if I try to click “Other Calendars” (Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Notes) only" → “Synchronize,” the program crashes immediately.

Any ideas?

Do you see a crash report or it crashes silently?

By “crash report,” do you mean the error log? I do get the “eM Client has stopped working” dialog, including the option to show the error.

Yes, I mean that, can you post the content of the error here?

Yes, happy to do that — but I don’t see an option to attach a fileThis text will be hidden. Should I go ahead and simply post the entirety of the text in a blockquote or something?

Please save the error text as text file and attach it here.

When I try to attach the notepad file, I get an error telling me “Sorry, the file you are trying to upload is not aufrorized (authorized extensions: jpg, jpeg, png, gif).”

Have you tried creating a new profile in eM Client and just importing a small chunk of your mail to see if it’s a corrupted import causing the issue? 9,423 messages in trash does seem like a lot, and those missing headers are suspicious.

I’ve emptied the trash, but to no avail. I wasn’t aware I could import a small chunk of mail, either. Do I need to reinstall to make that happen?

(I’m sorry, I’m bouncing back and forth between this forum and my regular workday and so my attention is split right now — I’ll try to respond to other posts ASAP).

Okay, I’m doing some more investigating this morning. Here’s what I’ve found:

  • Clicking “Refresh” immediately crashes the program.
  • “Send and Receive All” immediately crashes the program.
  • “Receive All” immediately crashes the program.
  • “Send All” does NOT crash the program.
  • Any action for my two Gmail accounts and one Microsoft account does NOT crash the program.

I think whatever the error is may be tied to the “Other calendars” thing. I should note that there are no items in the “Local Folders” calendar.

I have tried removing the Local Calendars from the calendar. I got the following warning:

“Are you sure you want to remove account Other Calendars? Warning: Removing this account will also locally remove all x folders and items in this account tree. This will not affect the data synchronized to the server.”

After removing the “Other Calendars” from the calendars:

  • Clicking “Refresh” does NOT crash the program.
  • “Send and Receive All” does NOT crash the program.
  • “Receive All” does NOT crash the program.
  • “Send All” does NOT crash the program.
  • Any action for my two Gmail accounts and one Microsoft account does NOT crash the program.

I think that may’ve solved my issue. I’ll report back if the app crashes randomly again.

Yeah, I think this is the fix. I haven’t had it crash in some time now — a couple of hours, at least!

Okay, confirmed — my client is still active after being left running all night.

Looks like removing the “Other Calendars” from the calendars successfully solved the issue.
