I’d like to request a feature that has been mentioned by many users over the years, but still isn’t available: remembering the message list’s collapsed/compact state on a per-folder basis.
The issue:
When I switch to another folder and come back, the message list expands again — even if I had previously collapsed all groups or was using the compact/condensed layout. This makes it necessary to re-collapse the view every time, which becomes repetitive when working across multiple folders.
Why it matters:
Users who manage many folders move between them frequently.
Re-expanding groups adds visual noise and slows navigation.
The client already supports single-line/compact layout, so allowing the state to persist per folder would greatly improve workflow.
Competing mail clients remember folder view states, so this would bring eM Client closer to that level of usability.
Requested feature:
Add an option like: “Remember message list layout per folder (collapsed/expanded groups, compact state)”
Or simply persist the collapsed/expanded state when returning to a folder during a session.
This would be a significant quality-of-life improvement for many users.
Thanks for considering it — eM Client is otherwise excellent, and this fix would make daily use much smoother.
There is a current Sleekplan suggestion “to remember the state / status of expanded / collapsed Message Lists which you can vote for below.
There is also a current Sleekplan suggestion to remember the Account folders open like Postbox used to do. You can vote for that via the following Sleekplan suggestion.
Yes. There’s requests for this feature for over 10 years now. It’s such a simple fix. Default set to “auto-collapse all folders” or “auto-expand all folders”
The inbox is increasingly becoming the workspace, with features like tasks, calendars, messaging, and VCs. Clutter and repetative work kill productivity, and if your tool is working against that, it will time for the consumers to switch.
It’s unfortunately not as simple a fix as it might seem. While it’s not something we can focus on right now, it is on our radar and something we might explore in future iterations of version 11.
Would you be able to elaborate more on why such a fix is so troublesome? - I know me saying that other email clients have been able to remember the state of collapsed/expanded message lists for the last 20 years doesn’t help the situation, however this personally for me is a really “hit or miss” lacking feature.
