PDF forwarding is corrupted or unreadable PDF file

I’m using eM Client [version 9.2.1628 (a307a94)], with two Gmail accounts.

When I forward an email that includes a PDF attachment, the recipient receives a corrupted or unreadable PDF file. This happens regardless of which Gmail account I use to forward the message, and whether I change the sender or not.

However, if I forward the same message from Gmail’s web interface, the PDF is intact.

This suggests a bug in how eM Client handles PDF encoding during forwarding from Gmail accounts.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Receive a message with a valid PDF attachment.
  2. Click “Forward” in eM Client.
  3. Send the message.
  4. Open the forwarded message — the PDF is corrupted.

Please advise or fix in a future release.

That’s an older version so could be the problem.

So first backup eM Client via “Menu / Backup”. You can see when the backup is complete in Show Operations via clicking the drop-down on the right of Refresh top left.

Once backed up, “close eM Client” and then go to the Release history page and download V9.2.2307 and install and see if that fixes the problem.

Thanks, will do. Can I update from within the app?

Yes there is a “check for update” via the Menu, but if that doesn’t work then d/l via the release history page.

Usually the later version would normally have been automatically pushed to you once fully tested, so might just have been a glitch that yours didn’t automatically update.

I updated, but still have the same issue. I did test some other pdfs, which worked fine. The problem pdf is a folio/receipt from a hotel.

To summarize, this one particular pdf can’t be forwarded in eM client, but can be forwarded by web gmail. Other pdfs can be forwarded by eM client. Any additional ideas?

Ok so that specific folio/receipt .pdf would need to be investigated by support.

So if you have a current active paid Pro or Personal version, go to the VIP Support page and login at the top left and lodge a support ticket and attach an example folio/receipt pdf with the problem.

Thanks, I don’t have VIP support, but I guess I will need to sign up if I want to have this investigated. Thanks for your help!

Yes if you purchase the product either as a “subscription” or “one off payment”, you will get 12 Months VIP support and also the full features of eM Client.

Small tip: in the meanwhile, convert your pdf to jpg — on a Mac, with GraphicConverter for instance.

It seems there might be a bug in how eM Client handles PDF attachments when forwarding emails from Gmail accounts. To fix this, please make sure you’re using the latest version of eM Client and try using the “Forward as Attachment” option instead of the regular forward button. You can also check your mail settings under Menu > Settings > Mail > Compose and confirm the message format is set to HTML. If possible, test by forwarding a different file type to see if the problem only happens with PDFs.

Thanks. I checked and format is set to HTML. If this happens again, I’ll try the forward as attachment option.
