Wow, that is some great troubleshooting! Thanks for the info, Christina. I have since switched from using Adobe Reader to PDF-XChange Editor. It is free, faster, and more capable than Adobe. However, it is good to know this fix exists if I ever need to switch back.
This workaround did not work for me. Files still took 15 seconds or so to open if Adobe was already open.
