Odd rendering of fonts in some emails

I get regular emails from John Lewis (UK) and the fonts are all wrong.  It is an HTML email and when I view the email in em Client it looks like this:

When I look at the email in Google Chrome webmail (gmail) it looks as it should (correct JL font) and also in Thunderbird it looks as it should - like this:

It is only emClient that is having the problem.  Most of my other emails are also fine.

Here is the message header/body part if anyone can shed any light I would be really grateful.  It looks really Micey Mouse and its irritating me :slight_smile:

If you go to Menu > Tools > Settings > Mail > Read, it would be better if you un-ticked  Read all messages in plain text. That way you can see the message as the sender intended. But if you want to use plain text, change the preferred font back to Segoe UI, 12pt.

Hi,  thanks for the reply however my setting is already unticked for “Read all messages in plain text”. It the HTML rendering that is all to cock.

When I put your code into an eml file it looks fine, except for a few things you might have changed when redacting your details. 

Can you try copy the message to a Local Folder and see if it displays correctly?

Hi,  Did that and it still looks weird for me - how odd ?!?

and.  Whats even odder is that if I open the eml file in Thunderbird it looks normal (as it would want to look) so it must be a setting in my em-client .  I tried taking the tick out of “use preferred font for fixed width” and it made no difference and also tried changing the “preferred font for messages” back to Segoe 12pt font but setting these in a different way did not change things either.

Most odd!

To check if it is your settings, close eM Client and rename C:\Users_[username]_\AppData\Roaming\eM Client\settings.dat to settings.bak. You will have to show hidden items and file name extensions in Windows Explorer to do this.

Restart eM Client and view the message. This will be using the default settings.

To recover your original settings, close eM Client and delete C:\Users_[username]_\AppData\Roaming\eM Client\settings.dat. Then rename settings.bak to settings.dat

I think I may have gotten to the bottom of this.  It looks like it is my Gill Sans font in Windows 10.

Some application must have messed with it because in Windows 10 I can see:


Notice the Gill Sans - it looks wrong and my correct Gill Sans is actually under Gill Sans MT

I just uninstalled the 2 fonts under “Gill Sans” and just left the font family “Gill Sans MT” and it now displays like it should in EMclient.  Looks like Thunderbird and Chrome were using the “Gill Sans MT” Font family even though the HTML coder specified “Gill Sans” all along but em Client was picking  the best of a bad bunch of fonts under “Gill Sans”

Anyway - All fixed now so thanks for pointing me in the right direction and I feel rather pleased with my Sherlock Holmes like mind on this one.

All is well that ends well.

Well, I did say you should change the font back to the default in my original comment. But glad you got it sorted anyway.

Well kind of.  you were talking about changing the font back in em Client.  what I did was completely different - removing a rogue font in the underlying windows subsystem!!
