New Machine: Manual Restore No Effect

On a new machine install, manually copying the contents of a backup zip into AppData\Roaming\eM Client has no effect in the gui. No accounts-emails-contacts whatsoever.
It was a relief to find that performing a restore from the same zip works perfectly!
Assuming it’s a missing registry setting that is the cause of the bizarreness, who knows?

On a new machine install, manually copying the contents of a backup zip into AppData\Roaming\eM Client has no effect in the gui.

Yes that’s because it’s still in an archival type state even when it’s extracted so it can only be restored via the Restore menu in eM Client.

So if you want to restore directly into the hidden database folder, then you would normally have to “first close eM Client on the old pc” and then manually copy the hidden database folder contents to a temporary folder on your new pc.

Then install “the same or later version of eM client on the new pc” and after installation “skip the setup” and then close eM Client. Then delete the hidden database folder contents on the new pc and replace it with your old computer hidden database folder contents & it should all appear when reopened.

There is also an updated new blog on transferring eM Client to a new device.
