Just created a new hotmail account and I am trying to add it to em client. But for 2 days now I get an error message that says “connection failed”. i have deleted and added the account multiple times. i have tried manual and automatic. it makes me log into hotmail on a webpage, so I know the pw is correct. but I get back to em client, nothing gets imported. no email, no folders. nothing.
You can only use the automatic account wizard with MS Hotmail accounts (since Sept 2024, due to Microsoft changes), where near the end of the wizard, “you click Ok / Allow” eM Client access to your Hotmail account, which then automatically sets up an IMAP account in eM Client.
If that part doesn’t complete the wizard, “try setting a different browser as the default” and then close and reopen eM Client and try again. Sometimes it can be a browser related problem.
Now if the automatic account wizard “does complete ok”, sometimes connection errors can then be caused by eg: Optionally installed Firewall / Security programs or Optionally installed Antivirus programs or VPNs. So if you have anything like that installed other than what comes default with the OS try completely disabling those to test incase of interference.
Now if none of the above makes any difference update what version of eM Client you are using and if you have Windows or Mac and what OS version.
Also click the dropdown on the right of Refresh top left and click “Show Operations”. Then click the “Log tab” and look for any obvious error messages and paste them in this thread. We might then be able to see why it won’t connect.
That means as per the log “there is a Mail Server problem atm” connecting to Hotmail.
So as its been like that for 2 days, then as per the log message, contact your email provider for assistance or in this case Microsoft technical support via phone or website.
Ps blank out the first part of your @hotmail.com address in your log for privacy reasons.
Microsoft does not show any attempted log ins by emclient.
Then they carn’t be looking properly as the log clearly shows “user is authenticated” as part of your log, which means “you are connected as far as your user credentials go” to one of their servers but is not getting the data back to the mail client for unknown reasons. We carn’t resolve that at the eM Client end.
Googling this issue, many different mail clients including Outlook, Thunderbird, Mailbird etc have also experienced these Microsoft server issues.
Ps My own Hotmail.com, Live.com & Outlook.com account “never get that error”, so I can only presume eg: Some of the global Microsoft mirror servers a faulty in some way.
