My laptop was stolen while being in sleep mode.
I’ll get a new laptop in a few days, but will I be able to get all my emails and contacts back, if I reinstall eM Client, register again and get my licence key?
Can I somehow “freeze” eM Client so that the person, who has the stolen laptop, doesn’t get access or at least can’t delete my old mails?
If someone has your stolen laptop its very difficult to crack a Windows or Mac screen lock password or to get into your User profile if they eg: put your laptop hard-disk in an external reader. So if you had computer Boot or normal User login password enabled and screen lock passwords enabled, I wouldn’t be too worried about peeps getting in.
For your email just for peace of mind atm, I would suggest to go online to your mailbox via a browser and reset your password. That way at least they can’t download any new mail even if they somehow got into your computer.
However you can remotely locate and lock a Windows and Mac device via the following links.
(Find and lock a lost Windows device)

will I be able to get all my emails and contacts back, if I reinstall eM Client, register again and get my licence key?
If you have an IMAP, Exchange, Office 365 or iCloud (Non POP) account then you just setup eM Client as new and all your mail, calendar, contacts, etc will all come back from the server.
If you have a POP account, unless you had set your eM Client account to “Leave messages on the server for alot amount of days” normally you won’t have anything and you would need to restore your eM Client data from “either an eM Client backup” via “Menu / File / Restore” or “from the eM Client hidden folder database location” if you have been either regularly saving eM Client backups or regularly saving your user profile data on an external drive or cloud drive.
Alternatively if you have a recent computer complete image saved to an external drive you could also restore the eM Client mail data to your new laptop from the emc backup or emc user data.
If you don’t have your eM Client license key to activate, you can get it that from the following link. You just enter your registered email address and the activation key will be sent to your inbox which you will need to get via your webmail and then copy the key to eM Client after setting up.
Thank you for the answer.
That doesn’t look good for me.
Actually I’m not 100% sure that it was “stolen”, but it went missing 7 days ago from a flight to home, and despite of several messages, the flight company hasn’t responded, so they haven’t found it.
I tried to locate the laptop, it shows the date of 26. August in Spain, where I spent the night in a hotel. So I guess nobody connected to the internet with the device since than.
At the airport they told me, that 99% of lost luggages are found within 72 hours, so I see a very little hope that mine would get back to me after 1 week.
I think I’ve had a POP account, and no set up to leave messages on the server
After this I’ll definitely change to another system, because that’s really frustrating to have lost all your emails, documents, voice messages, photos, books etc. etc.
My last backup to an external drive was in April, so that means I’ve lost hundreds of mails, if I restore that database to a new laptop.
Well, I’ll never fly with that company again, but that doesn’t bring my laptop back either. :-(.
Thanks tho.

Could then be your laptop is possibly still in your hotel room. I would call or email the hotel just incase you accidentally left it there and a eg: room cleaner might have picked it up by now & kept it in the hotel lockup lost items for safe keeping.
I think I’ve had a POP account, and no set up to leave messages on the server.
By default eM Client for a POP account setup, normally sets the client to leave messages on the server for approx 4-5 days, so all your devices can get the same email in your inboxes. However if you need it longer than that, you would need to adjust that in the mail account settings.
Mail clients normally don’t set POP accounts by default to leave copy of messages for too many days by default as “most POP accounts don’t have much server space” and are limited.
After this I’ll definitely change to another system, because that’s really frustrating to have lost all your emails, documents, voice messages, photos, books etc. etc
If you have a POP account “using any mail client” you have to allways backup data to either an external drive or cloud drive incase of hard-disk failure or incase something happens to your laptop or desktop like in this case where you can’t locate it atm. Hopefully you do get it back.
So if you haven’t currently got your user profile data backed up to any other external drive or cloud drive etc, then your only option would be to “ask your mailbox provider to see if they keep any snapshots or backups of your mailbox” which they then might be able to restore depending on your provider. Some mailbox paid providors do.
In the future, if you want to still use a POP setup, suggest to use the built-in eM Client “automatic periodic backups” where you can eg: setup the mail client to backup daily and allways keep the last 3 backups. You can set that up via “Menu / Settings (Preferences) / General / Backup”.
Also regularly copy your complete user profile data to an external and / or cloud drive. That way you can easily restore the eM Client backup on either a new hard-disk if it failed or replacement computer from the “Documents / eM Client” user folder.
Lastly maybe “look at changing to an IMAP setup” in eM Client if you have server mailbox space, where then all your incoming mail, sent mail, calendar, contacts etc “resides on the server end” so that way you can still access all your email on another device temporarily like a mobile or tablet or other loan computer till yours is back or replaced. I’ve had to do that when my own computer broke down a few times in the past.
I received my newly purchased laptop yesterday.
The old one is definitely not in the hotel room, it was in my hand luggage at the airport, I had to go through the “security gate” where I needed to put it aside, and it was put back in the luggage. But Iberia took my luggage before boarding (even if it’s forbidden to put electronic devices in the plane’s deposit luggage space) and the luggage never appeared at the destination. I’ve made a police report but the spanish police doesn’t even reply to my mail, even though the stolen luggage’s cost with PC etc. altogether is 1300 Euro + personal value. It’s very frustrating but they don’t care about “small people”.
So I needed to buy a new laptop, and back then I’ve made a Windows security saving to a storage in February, 6 months ago.
I took the laptop to an IT-shop where they “put back” the files and images from the security storage to the new laptop. There was also an eM Client archive, and the informatician confirmed that all the accounts reapperead in the programe. When I got home, I opened eM Client, but at first the system informed me that despite my licence, I had eM Client 9 and now I can’t continue without purchasing version 10 for 25 Euros (and I know that I didn’t have to buy it on the old one).
But as I desperately wanted my emails back, I purchased the new version, and the system downloaded 260 emails FROM February up to now. But all the emails that were / are in the archice (before February) aren’t there. I use GMX and Gmail account so I know that there are old emails from 2022, 2023 too, but how can I reload them into the new version without losing the new emails that arrived after February?
It takes long hours to DL all the old programs and install them again, and all the bills that arrived between February and September, thanks to Iberia and the person who stole it. :-((((
I hope there’s a solution to get back the old emails and keep the “new” ones as well.

If you have a V9 on an external drive with an archive mail folder, or a backup.zip file or your User profile eM Client hidden database folder from your old laptop on an external device, you would normally first install the latest V9.2 from the release history page, and then restore your V9 data which can then be done a few different ways.
However as you have now upgraded to V10 and bought a licensed version and downloaded all your new Acct mail and you want to now retrieve your old mail from your V9 archive and keep your existing new mail, then I would suggest to first create a manual backup of eM Client via “Menu / Backup” just incase you need to restore for any reason. You can see when the backup is complete in Show Operations via clicking the dropdown on the right of Refresh top left.
Then suggest to use the new “Create a data file option” in V10 via “Menu / Data files” as per @Gary post below in the following thread, to export / save your current new acct messages and any current message folders etc you need to a new mail folder within the data file. The data file is stored by default in your “Documents / eM Client” folder.
You can then drag / move all your new downloaded mail and any mail folders under the data file “into a custom folder” called eg: Mail Acct 1.
If you have more than one mail account in V10, then create another folder in the new data file for each account called eg: Mail Acct 2 , Mail Acct 3 etc and then drag / move all those account messages and any message folders etc under that.
Then once you have all your account messages and messages folder you need to keep in the data file, then “Unmount that data file” using the Unmount button. Then close eM Client.
Then uninstall eM Client V10 and “don’t delete the database when asked on the uninstall wizard”. Then go to the following eM Client hidden database folder "C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\eM Client" and “rename it” to eg: eM Client old.
Then download the latest V9.2 from the release history page as per the link advised at the top and install. Then open eM Client and “skip the setup” and close eM Client.
Then go to your external storage backup device of your previous laptop and go to your same user profile eM Client hidden database location C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\eM Client\ and “copy the eM Client folder” to your new laptop same Roaming folder location.
Next open eM Client and it should be exactly the same as it was when you had your old laptop. Then close eM Client and upgrade to the latest V10 via the release history page link and then enter your new V10 license via “Menu / Help / License”.
Then go to “Menu / Data Files” and click “Mount” along the top and select your Mail Acct 1 data file you previously created. Then drag the new messages and any messages etc from the saved data file back to V10. Then once completed unmount the data file. Then finally make a new backup of eM Client via “Menu / Backup”.
Hi there. It’s taken me a lot of time to get back the mails, because the backup wasn’t in EM Client’s folder but finally I managed, so even if I lost files from my old laptop, I at least got back my old emails. So thank you a thousand time.
