Moving from Tbird

Now that Thunderbird will stop development, I am thinking about moving to another client . . and eM Client is at the top of the list. I am just not sure how it would all work.

I would like to import my Tbird folders and messages into eM Client. But I am not clear how that would work with my Gmail account going forward. And then there is the issue of keeping my 3 computers plus iPad plus Android phone in sync after that. I am willing to sign for a Pro account, but not sure I want to sign up for 3 or more!

Right now, I have all my mail retrieved by POP3 into Tbird and use a third party program to sync between computers. I also have a copy of each email go to my gmail account. But I only use the gmail when I do not have access to one of my Tbird accounts. I never got into using labels and tags, and I have a very nice Tbird setup with a number of pre-defined filters.

thanks in advance for any help,

rfinney

Yikes!
That seems like a lot of questions to me.
I seem to remember just using emclients import function for a start.

Why don’t you install emclient and just try it out.

Sorry about all the questions . . just hoping to get some idea of how this would work before I plunge ahead.

Let me boil it down to one key question: let’s say I get my Tbird emails into eM, duplicating folder structure. How does sync with gmail work, given that my gmail is just an unorganized bunch of emails?

From what I have read, it may be a difficult and time-consuming procedure to get those emails into eM. I would like to have some idea of how things would work after that before I commit to a project like that.

Hope this helps narrow the focus down to something that others can easily respond.

If you already are forwarding all your mail to gmail, you could just replicate the Tbird folder structure in gmail (it works about the same, they just call them labels). Then the folder structure will show up in eM. Or, you could just use eM to move everything into the proper folders, and it will sync back up to gmail. The beauty of using gmail as the “master copy” is it automatically stays in sync with your iPad and Android phone.

Mike . . thx much for your reply. This helps a lot. Also gets me to thinking that if I could replicate Tbird structure in gmail, and then sync to eM, maybe I could avoid trying to import Tbird into eM in the first place. Don’t know how easy (or hard) it is to do.

I really see the importance of letting gmail be the “master copy.”

thx again!

rfinney.

Can you tell me how you sync Thunderbird to an Android Mobile. I want to keep my email in sync and did not think that there were any programs that sinked Thunderbird. I currently use Eudora but am happy to upgrade to Thunderbird. I was the going to upgrade from Thunderbird to EM Client because I thought it had a sync to Android but it appears that it only syncs the Calender and contacts whereas I want to keep the email in sync.

I do not use gmail and do not want to. I prefer to keep my old mail and filing structure on my computer.

Fabian,

I do not know any way to do so. It seems like all the 3rd part apps only sync calendar and contacts, kind of like what you have run into. I don’t think android mail apps are designed to sync directly with desktop applications.

So you need to use some sort of IMAP email account, google or otherwise. And ten have Tbird and your android mail app sync with your mail server.

Thanks for that. It confirms what I was beginning to suspect. Trouble is I do not want to change my email accounts and the whole way I work just to accommodate having email on a smart phone. i’me not sure I want email chasing me around that much. I think i will leave it on the desktop. I have the ability to check my inbox on the phone and delete the rubbish. I think I will leave it at that and forget about full syncronisation. I know all my email passes through other people’s servers but I do not feel comfortable about leaving my entire history in the Cloud.
