MCP server (--mcp) fails to initialize with Claude Desktop – eM Client 11.0.473

Environment: eM Client 11.0.473 (9e16cce), Microsoft Store version, Windows 11. Claude Desktop 2.7032.0.0 (MSIX).

Config (as generated by eM Client, “Claude App” tab):
"command": "C:\\Users\\<user>\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\WindowsApps\\eMClientStore.exe", "args": ["--mcp"]

Issue: Claude Desktop starts the process and sends initialize (id 0). eM Client replies with a JSON-RPC error response with "id": null instead of id: 0. Claude rejects it (ZodError: expected string/number, received null), then the process exits: “Server disconnected”.

Manual test from PowerShell, with eM Client running, piping the same initialize request to eMClientStore.exe --mcp: no output at all, process exits immediately.

Expected: a valid initialize result, or at least an error echoing the request id, so the actual cause is visible.

Log excerpt attached (mcp-server-emclient.log).

Hi @DECOUPEH2O, the Microsoft Store version of eM Client does not have the BETA version of 11 available.
The new eM Client 11 for Windows just now uses MSIX/appinstaller instead of the previous MSI.
You can read more about the Beta here:

As for your issue - it seems you are missing the mcp-secret parameter, we will add this parameter back on our side in one of the upcoming updates.
The solution for you right now would be to manually add the parameter --mcp-secret with the actual secret from the app filled in.

It’s the last update.
No way

The snippet example for client configuration is missing the --mcp-secret parameter. It should look something like this (on windows):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "emclient": {
      "command": "C:\\Users\\username\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\WindowsApps\\eMClientStore.exe",
      "args": [
        "--mcp",
        "--mcp-secret",
        "YOURSECRETGOESHERE"
      ]
    }
  },

{
“mcpServers”: {
“emclient”: {
“type”: “stdio”,
“command”: “C:\Users\marcw\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\eMClientStore.exe”,
“args”: [
“–mcp”
“–mcp-secret”,
“dlkgjfdlkjlkjnfljngilk-itsnotmykeynumber”
]
}
},

Hello,
The correct parameters :

{
“mcpServers”: {
“emclient”: {
“type”: “stdio”,
“command”: “C:\Users\marcw\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\eMClientStore.exe”,
“args”: [
“–mcp”,
“–mcp-secret”,
“thekeynumber”
]
}
},

Salut DECOUPEH2O,
I had the same problem.
It was solved by renewing the MCP-secret (and also adjusting for the new secret, of course, in the claude_desktop_config.json).
There seems to be a problem with the first MCP secret that em Client generates. Or, at least, that solved the problem for me.
