I have a few simple questions concerning:

mail_data.dat-bak

  1. what exactly is this file (a backup file previously generated in eM Client using the backup function).
  2. why is it significantly larger than my main database mail_data.dat? 7 GB vs. 5.6 GB
  3. is it safe to remove or move mail_data.dat-bak?

Not really advisable to remove files manually from the database folder as this can break the database.

You can close eM Client, then run the following command in Windows Command Prompt:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\eM Client\MailClient.exe" /dbrepair

See if that cleans up all the bak files.
