Is the license valid per device or per installed operating system (if two operating systems are installed in parallel on one device)?
If it is valid per device: How can i activate the license at the other operating system (i have Ubuntu Linux 24.x and wine and winetricks and eM Client is starting).
Unfortunately you canât activate a license on Linux. We only support Windows and MacOS.
Thank you, Gary - but:
i could install the free version of eM-Client under ubuntu 24.x with the WINE and Winetricks and it works with the limitations of the free version - so it should be possible to work with Em Client pro too (my question is not about the software/hardware, but only how to use the pro-License: again or have i to buy a new one?).
You canât activate an eM Client license on Linux. Neither a Free license, nor a Pro license.
That is because we only support Windows and MacOS.
And that is why a still small, but steadily growing number of organisations pay âŹ12.99 /user/month for Proton Business suite. Users prefer eM Client, but you will have to support Linux natively to stay in business on the long term. Wine, Bottle etc. is a âpins and needlesâ workaround IMHO.
you will have to support Linux natively to stay in business on the long term.
I disagree. Linux is such a small percentage of the global users and that hasnât really changed since the early 90âs. Most Linux desktop users also donât pay anything to use it. So the cost to develop a Linux version in the hope users might pay wouldnât really be viable in my view.
That was true until a few years ago. A new generation is growing up now running their games on Linux with products like Steam.
If you talk about consumers: yes, thatâs true, like it is on Windows. But eM Client is with the Personal and Business versions in the SMB market. For companies the cost of desktop software is a negligible part of the total cost of an employee.
And eM Client is in a special segment of that market: companies that donât go along with the agressive MS 365 marketing. Windows itself is now becoming an âoperating system as a serviceâ. And while we are still paying for the software, Microsoft has decided to make data surveillance and profiling their main source of income. Windows has become a vehicle to draw the user to âThe new Bingâ, Copilot, MSN dot com etc.
On the other hand the EU is with DMA and DSA undermining this business model. It is becoming hard to comply with EU regulations, work with sensitive data and still go along with Microsoft. To an increasing number of organisations Microsoft is not the most logical choice any more. Thatâs why alternatives are gaining momentum.
I fully understand that Linux is not worth supporting. IMO majority of users who choose Linux because is free, want it free and donât want to pay for anything else.
BUT - question was about if user can or canât use the same license on two operaing systems (probably on single computer / dual boot / hotswap / whatever), not if eM Client supports or not Linux. Itâs up to user if he was able to run program or not. He was able to run eM Client under Linux using WINE and good for him! So no matter how much you support Linux or not, question was not about supporting operating system, because this user donât want to buy Linux version of your program. It was only about licensing - as I understand, he wants to be fair and since is still single computer / single user, itâs only a problem with method youâre using for licensing, not supporting OS. So in fact you donât support two activations on the same computer. I suspect that I would have the same problem if I want to install my copy of eM Client on the same computer, on Windows, but using my second Windows (I can replace my boot drive using hotswap drive bay and boot different Windows - still on the same computer and I am still the same user).
I donât know about dual boot operating systems with the same license, but if you eg: bought the new Personal license âas per the new updated Pricing pageâ, its now valid for 3 devices.
@Gary will one existing license or new personal license work on a dualboot setup or hotswap on a single computer, or only on separate computers.
I didnât know that. I though that I must deactivate one computer to activate another. At least that I remember. If 3 devices are allowed, then I donât know why OP do not just try to use serial.

Yes years ago âif you only had a single licenceâ and you were moving or switching between computers, you had to first deactivate your license on your computer, and then activate your same license on the new computer.
But the new versions of eM Client (for some years now), automatically deactivate the license on the old computer when you activate the same licence on the new computer.
If 3 devices are allowed, then I donât know why OP do not just try to use serial.
If you have an existing Single Pro licence (prior to the new updated Pricing page), it wonât allow 3 devices. Only one device at a time.
A dual boot is seen as two devices. That is because each device reports a different ID to the license server. So if your license supports two devices, there is no re-activation needed.
Using Linux as an example is pointless because you canât activate a license using Linux. eM Client licenses are only for Windows and MacOS.
