Issue with migrating eM Client from old laptop to new

I bought a new Dell laptop and wanted to migrate my eM Client from my old HP laptop. I found out too late that doing a back-up and moving the zipped file to the Dell would be the way to go. Unfortunately, I did not do that but only copied over all the eM Client folders and files from the HP to a folder on the Dell.

How should I proceed here? I have contacts and a busy calendar with data I do not wish to lose. Help!

The database is the complete C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\eM Client\ folder from the old device. If you have that, with eM Client closed, copy the \eM Client\ folder to the C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\ folder on the Dell. You may have to enable hidden items in Explorer to get there.

Thanks Gary. I found the folder and copied that eM Client folder on the path you recommended. Do I launch the “MailClient.exe” (254 kb)? How do I proceed from here? I presume the old laptop license is deactivated. What are the steps for me now to follow?

If you haven’t already done so, download eM Client from here, then install it and run from the Windows Start Menu.

Gary, I was mostly successful with a few issues.

1). I’m missing all my calendar entries and a small number of custom saved email folders I created from my old laptop installation. Any way to retrieve them or are they lost forever? :frowning:

2). Activation Key: I was sent a “lost activation key.” I don’t know if this is the one from when I first set up eM Client on the old laptop or a new one. In any case it seemed to work.

  1. Licenses: When clicking on License in the menu I keep getting a prompt to “deactivate” the old license from August 2021 when I first installed eM Client. I presume a new license was issued but I can’t find it to retain in my records. I can’t see it on the company website either. I did see an option for a “License Manager” but in trying to access that it prompts for a “User Group” which is no where to be seen.

Any suggestions here? I feel I’m almost there.

If the data is not in the database you copied, or synced with a server, then unless you have an eM Client backup in which it exists, it is lost.

There is only one key. It doesn’t change. If it is already activated, there is nothing more you need to do.

To point #1 I think you are right as I never thought to “back-up” an email program. Should I do that going forward and why? Synching?

To point #2 is “activation key” the same as “license”?

If you have data that is not synced with a server, it is important that you have backups as a database issue may result in loss of data. If all the data is synced with a server, simply adding the accounts again will display that data. But it is also possible that data can be deleted from the server either by you or a server action. If you have a backup from when that data was displayed in eM Client, it is possible to selectively restore it back to the server.

A license has a key. When you purchase a license, or register a Free license, we send you an activation key for that license.
